I was re-re-re-reading the series over the past week. I'm currently up to TSS, and on the page opposite chapter one, is a picture of Violet and Klaus in the cart, speeding towards the cliff. I found it funny that there is a bowl, with apples falling out of it, about 3/4 down the picture, in the middle of the page.
What do you think of it? I just laughed, possible reference to TE and the bitter apples?

There was also a reference to apples in TBB. When the Baudeliares first entered Count Olaf's hous they saw a bowl of apple cores.

I love how authors hid foreshadowing bits like that. JK Rowling does it too. Thanks for pointing that out!

Also, in the letter from lemony to "My Kind Editor" in TGG, he mentions "very bitter..." (the page is cut off there.) I assume that the next word is apples, in which case he forshadows yet again with the apples.

I assumed that that referred to TPP's bitter tea. And I'm dubious about interpreting every reference to apples or bitter things as foreshadowing The End.

Well yes, it is wise to realize that Handler doesn't necessarily have to be foreshadowing the apples incident 3 years before it happened. But still, their presence in the beginning of the novel where the sugarbowl becomes a big issue is suspicious.

It seems more likely that 'very bitter' refers to the tea, as the letter is supposed to be about the next book in the series, TPP. Although, I'm surprised that Lemony didn't say something more like 'a beverage as bitter as', as if to start Kit's quote on the bitterness and sharpness of tea.
And I agree with Dante in that you can't assume all apples and bitter foods refer to the hyrbids. That's like assuming every time tea is mentioned, it could be refering to a certain, very in, teaset.

Used to be the case that some people took every reference to bowls in the series as being to the sugar bowl, including Olaf and Hal's fruit bowls.

Yes, and isn't it nice to be past those stages in the fandom? I was drawn here because it seems like there are serious discussions going on, and I'm often inclined to post my opinion on theories - something I usually don't do on other sites. It feels like a debate or conversation, rather than an endless barrage of meaningless opinions... "Oh, so-and-so would never do that!" and "You just don't like him!" Sorry to go off on a tangent like that, but I just wanted to say how proud I am of 667 for being beyond such predictable jumps as sugar bowls, and we can move on to the bigger mysteries. When I saw the reference to the bowl falling off the mountain, I was sure it would be a sugar bowl debate. But it's not... 667 digs deeper, even if it isn't always the most pertinant of topics. ;D
