I am confused right now with all the things that relate the series of unfortunate events with the ramona quimby series. In the autobiography, there is the thing that says, "have you been good to your mother?" is a code for joining vfd, and that is the same thing that that strange man asks ramona in one of the books. Not to mention Beatrice, which is the name of Ramona's older sister and also the name of the mysterious dead woman Lemony loves. Anybody have any theories?

do you think maybe ramona books were in code or something so that people wanting to join vfd could look at them and find out? fictionally, of course
or maybe there is some other reason that the opposite side of the schism didn't want children at prufrock prep, or just children in general, to read them?

Has anybody seen my information on the Unofficial Lemony Snicket website? It's about the Ramona thing. (I'm "Woodin") Basically, I assumed the same thing...that Ramona was the 9 year old 'R' and her sister Beatrice was the one Lemony fell in love with.

I've read a bit of Ramona a few years back and in case you didn't know, Beatrice, Ramona's sister, was named after their Aunt Beatrice. In Ramona Forever, their aunt gets married to Mr. Hobart Kemp. Does that have anything to do with Lemony? Wasn't Beatrice married to someone else or something? ;D Now there's something to ponder about!

Don't do it again, or I'll have to give you an official warning. And Daniel Handler seems to be a great admirer of Beverly Cleary. At least two of her characters (Ramona Quimby and the strange man with a sharp crease in his trousers and shiny shoes) are volunteers, her name is given to one of the sailors in the Prospero report in the U.A., one of her books is on the Prufrock Prep. reading list in the U.A., an extract from one of her books is in the U.A., and the same extract is parodied by Carmelita's autobiography in the U.A., and in TGG, Widdershins says that one of the people on the volunteer suits was Cleary. If any of us ever meet Handler, we must remember to ask him what the deal is with Beverly Cleary.

I really wouldn't go on talking about how Ramona Quimby is in VFD or whatever in ASOUE - it's just an allusion Handler's making to somebody he admires, as it has been said. Don't take it like it really means anything.
