Before TGG came out, there was some speculation that Phil was a VFD member, although I've always seen him as just another clueless bumbling adult. However, there's some minor circumstantial evidence for his VFD-hood in TGG, in which Phil is the cook on Captain Widdershins' submarine. He writes "Violet's Fifteenth Date" on a birthday cake for her, which it is implied that he made. Do you think that Phil is in any way connected to VFD, or is he just a poor limping optimist looking everywhere for work?

He's definetly in VFD. They were talking about VFD in front of him.

I was thinking maybe he found the balloons with VFD on, so decided to make them stand for 'Violet's Fifthteenth Date'

Interesting theory; it implies that Phil doesn't know the true meaning of VFD but sees the initials and thinks "Let's have them stand for something nice!"

If he wasn't in V.F.D., how did he get the job? It's not as though V.F.D. takes out full-page adverts in The Daily Punctilio asking for cooks for their secret submarines, is it?

Definetly. In my opinion, at least. I mean, why would he randomly get on the Queequeg with Widdershins? And about the Violet's Fifteenth Date...well, just another proving fact he IS in V.F.D.

It's interesting how Lemony is taking characters from the pre-VFD books and working them into the mystery, as he did in the Autobio with Orwell and Larry, among others. I wonder if he'll bring back any characters in book 12 (Sir, maybe? Or Charles? or Jerome?)

Phil is in VFD now, obviously, but since when?

I think he is in VFD because of the evidence that other people have posted previously.
