There could have been a thread like this before but what do you think are the ages of some of the characters?
Count Olaf - 56
Justice Strauss - 49
Aunt Josephine - 57
Sir - 53
Phil - 25
Vice Principal Nero - 51
Carmelita Spats - 13 or 14
Jerome - 38
Esme - 48
Hector - 35
Babs - 54
Captain Widdershins - 49
Fiona's Brother (I forget his name)- 43
Lemony Snicket - 39

There might have been, but it was ages ago.
Isadora, Duncan, Quigley - 13.
Carmelita - 13.
Fernald (the hook-handed man) - 31.

I also think Lucafont/Hooky/Fernald is in his early 30's.
Fiona: 19-21 Carmelita: 12 Esme: 35 Charles: 39(just a random estimate, there's not much description of him to go by)

I thought Fiona was only a little bit older than Violet, like 16. I thought Fernald was already a middle-aged man. Before I found out he was Fiona's brother I thought he was maybe Count Olaf's age.

I had Fiona at around 16 or 17 in my mind. I worked out Fernald's age by doing sums involving Fiona's presumed age and Fernald's age in the Widdershins family photo. Fernald would be around 31-37ish, depending on how you interpret things.

When I tried to figure out Fernald's age, I got 30-35. He was a teenager when Fiona was a baby, about, say, 14-19. Fiona is about 16 now. 30-35.
Olaf: Later 40's. Esmé: Mid 30's. Carmelita: 13ish Baudelaire parents: Late 40's. Lemony: Mid-late-30's. Kit and Jacques: Mid-late 30's. Jerome: Mid 30's. Mr. Poe: Mid 40's.

I always thought Fiona was still 15. I mean, Handler said she looked a LITTLE older than Violet, and at the time Violet was 14. She later turned 15 in the book, but Fiona was only a little older. Plus, why would a 17 year old kiss a 13 year old? Just my opinion.

Jerome- 40s Esme- early to mid thirties (This would imply Esme has been romantically linked to Olaf since she was a teen, but Olaf does like the younger girls after all) Olaf- mid to late 50s. This is a subject of much debate. See above. He's definitely old enough to be the Baudelaire's father, if not their grandfather (NOT saying he is!) He's just been around forever. Lemony- See above. Beatrice- dead in her mid thirties Carmelita- I always picture her much younger, maybe 9 or 10. Lucafont- Could be as old as his forties, my sister and I are 10 years apart. If he was born when his mother was 18 or so, there could be as much as twenty years between them.

That's right. For some reason, I've always thought that Violet is fifteen, Klaus is thirteen, and Sunny has recently passed out of babyhood. Olaf is an old fart.

One thing I don't get-- Duncan looks around Violet's age and isadora looks about Klaus's age, but the Quagmires are triplets, so they should be the same age. Also, Klaus and Isadora are in the same class and then Violet and Duncan are in another together; classes were grouped by age right? So.. how old does this make them, how does this work? How old is Sunny? That's always puzzled me for some reason! and Happy New Year!

The Quagmires are 13, described as 'younger than Violet, yet older then Klaus' In my school, we have a lot of people my age, so we have seven different classes with the same age groups. Perhaps Prufock Prep works like that. Olaf is pretty old-his hair is grey, isn't it?

In the seventh book, she learns to walk, so what's the average age babies learn to? Most learn to walk at about one year, or a little older, and some don't start walking well until two. But since Sunny is quite precocious and intelligent, she may well be younger than that as of TVV.

Perhaps Prufock Prep works like that. Yes. Split-age classes. Say, people in Grade Six can be grouped with either Grade Fives or Grade Sevens.

Grades? Can you tell me exactly what age you get put into certain grades as I live in England and we have years over here. Anyway, back to the ages of the characters: Fiona:16 Olaf: 39 Esme: 29 Widdershins: 53 Kit: 27/28 Carmelita: A very immature (understatement of the century!) 13 Fernald: 25

Hal: 77 (nobody said him yet)
I don't see the point of guessing Kit or Babs when we've seen so little (or none at all) but if you want to go there, then Larry the waiter is a striking young 23.
