This may seem like a wierd thread but, I have thought up a theory, that the reason Mr. Poe coughs so much, is because he's evil and helped 'burn' down houses, and because of burning down so many places, he inhaled/intook much smoke therefore, it damaged his lungs so he coughps. Just like smokers cough, sometimes.

A: I've heard that theory speculated on before, and I'm not sure if I believe it. After much thought, I've come to the uncertain conclusion that Mr. Poe is a pawn of the evil VFD, roped into schemes which he doesn't even understand, perhaps by bribes or death threats.
C: Of course, his pawnhood wouldn't rule out exposure to smoke, and therefore coughing fits resulting from such. Keep in mind, though, that he's supposedly had that cold from childhood.
A: True, and perhaps he's been unknowingly involved in VFD from a young age. What other possibilities could there be?
C: One of the weirdest theories I've ever seen is one stating that the coughing was a code of some sort.
A: Sort of a Sebald code for people who can't afford bells?
C: Something like that, but it's a rather strange idea. I don't really buy it.
A: In Lemony's world, strange does not mean untrue. But I don't think the coughing is likely to be a code, either.

thats a good theory, although we also should consider other things which might have no relation whatsoever to anything that happens to the orphans. For example... maybe Mr. Poe's father was a smoker and Poe has inhaled too much second hand smoke in his lifetime. Also, the fact that his childhood cold may have caused this is likely because many colds can lead to lifetime of cough attacks due to the infllamation of the lungs. Although the theory you suggested is possible and maybe Mr/ Poe will play an important role in the future. Also, it is quite possible he has a connectionand has been purposley leading the children to places which Olaf will make his next appearance, as they would be in cahoots, although this theory has been floating around for a long time.

In the conversation Poe had with his sister (what's her name again?) in the UA, the tape-recorded one at the restaurant, the woman says that he's had the cough since he was very young.

The reference to tuberculous is a good idea.
The silliest theory I've heard is that Poe coughs because he's infected with the Medusoid Mycelium. If he were. he'd be dead, or he would have infected the Baudelaires by now.

In TSS, Snicket states that people sometimes cough when they don't know what to say. Whether or not that applies to Poe I couldn't say.
What I can say, though, is that in TBB, it says that he coughs because he always has a cold.
The children remembered Mr. Poe because he always had a cold and was constantly excusing himself from the table to have a fit of coughing in the next room.

But what would cause someone to have a permacold? It would have to be more serious than a regular common cold. Even children only get around six colds a year, and adults get up to four. Not continuous cold material.

I think that Poe's coughing is just a big red herring. Just to get our minds working!

I love the tubercular idea...shows Mr Poe in a whole new light...
I always seem to have a cold, or to be recovering from one...
I dislike the "smoker's cough" theory. A lot. An example of the ridiculous conjectures that have appeared on the unofficial FAQ of late...

Sir's head is covered in smoke, yet he doesn't cough nearly as much as Poe. I just think its a thing he does. It kinda makes him seem more pathetic and wimpy though. It serves no further purpose.

I hope Mr. Poe coughs because of a deadly mixture of bronchitis, malaria, and pneumonia. Lemony Snicket probably does it for the same reasons as PJ has gone to switzerland says. Just for the effect.

Mr. Poe just coughs for no reason and that is an explanation but...I guess it's just not one of the mysteries you think about alot. I think he just coughs cuz he coughs. It doesn't really need to be explained.
