If the Aura of Menaces, the MWBANH and the WWHANB, are Olaf's older siblings, then why is Olaf a Count? Titles are usually passed to the oldest son. My theory is that Olaf's brother (M or N) did something so terrible that he got disinherited from the title, perhaps murdering his parents. Other ideas?

That's a very good observation, RockSunner. Perhaps Olaf simply calls himself a count to make himself feel special and superior. If I remember correctly, Olaf's alleged siblings did not refer to him as Count Olaf. He may just call himself that because he is arrogant.
Also, for all we know, Count Olaf could be a fake name.

I'll bet ten dollars Count Olafs real name is Bernard.

I'll bet ten dollars Count Olafs real name is Bernard. That was the most arbitrary statement I have heard all day. Count Olaf's name is Olaf.

Wow. I was kidding. Nobody here has a sense of humor, lol. I wasn't saying it was stupid; I knew she was kidding. Olaf is his first name.

I think he gave himself the title, and he's not really a count.

Hey, Bernard actually has some evidence. Look in the notes at the back of TBB:RE and the lion head in Olaf's house is either named Beatrice or Bernard. (Or Bertrand, maybe. Anyone have a copy?) Lions were named after their trainers, and we know that lions were used in VFD to sniff out smoke. I personally think, however, that the Baudelaire father's name is Bertrand, his sister being Beatrice, so that they might have trained the same lion, one that count Olaf decided to slaughter and turn into a trophy.

Bertrand, yes. Olaf giving himself the title of "Count" seems more plausible to me than it being bestowed upon him by some honorable person. Count n. 1.A nobleman in some European countries. 2.Abbr. "Ct." Used as a title for such a nobleman. 3: a nobleman (in various countries) having rank equal to a British earl. My middle name is Bernard.
I realised the other day that it's only two letters different from Fernald.
Anyway, down to business. He's called Count Olaf because Handler wanted him to have a creepy name, and it was only later, when Handler expanded the plot after the books became popular, that Olaf was given siblings (if he was at all - the M. and N. theory is widely disputed). So, in summary, it's a plot hole, but we can make it all better by pretending that this whole thing never happened.
