This doesn't belong in the advice thread, and I couldn't see an official thread around, so I thought I'd post my reveiw here. Oh, and beware of possible spoilers, I guess.
I got it yesterday, and finished it this morning, despite my gamecube deleting as much as I did at some point yesterday. It's a fun game, but either much too short, or much too easy.
I enjoyed it thoroughly though. It was more loyal to the books then the film was, and I liked the narration by whoever it was-the name escaped me, but I recognize the voice. The animation was pretty good as well.
The Bad Beginning part of it was quite good, if not simple, because it was teaching you the basic things. On aiming and target things, however, I had to get my little brother to do, but that's just because I'm hopeless at it. I enjoyed the Sunny bits on this-especially the little slide at the beginning. If you noticed, if you keep pressing 'Y' (the button that switches between Violet and Klaus) you can make it look like they're fighting, something I found very fun to do. I guess I'm just sad. Oh, and when Sunny completes her levels, her celebratory dances are great (:
Anyway, the the troupe fights in TBB were pretty good. I enjoyed fighting the 'dancing' powder faced women, and dodging Lucafont's barrels wasn't half bad either. But the bald man? Geez, his fight got tiresome. And I didn't like the so-called 'witty' lines by the troupe after you had defeated them. I liked Violet's inventions, all though most of the equipment for it was too close to make it even slightly difficult.
The train bit was pretty fun, in my eyes anyway, especially the bit with the narrator saying 'and then, just as the train was about to hit them, a flying unicorn swept out of the sky, and took them to safety.'
The Reptile Room bit was pretty good too, if not better then TBB. I enjoyed getting the trophies, especially the Sunny one, sliding down the tree. I didn't like Violet's though, unfortunatly. The maze was fun-maybe the best bit of the whole game. It worked so well, and I enjoyed it very very much. The animation of it was good.
And then to wreck it all, comes the bloody bald man, who's dressed as a snake charmer. The fight is exactly the same as the last time. He goes for a lame attack that envolves making a dust forcefield thing, and then running to another place. And every time you attack him, it takes away so little of his health, you're doing the same thing again and again and again and again.
Then you went up to Stephano's room, and we shared a barrel of laughs, as Lucafont decided to chuck more barrells at us. Again, it was okay, but maybe that's because my brother did it the first time, so I'd never done it before. Then you fight but one of the women, which it okay, better then the other two.
Afterwards, Monty dies, and there's a fun mini-game involving Sunny, which is like the other's we've done, but enjoyable nonetheless. I much enjoyed the Stephano quotes as I proceeded through it. Then nothing else happens, there's a little cartoony bit where Stephano is discovered and escapes, and then another long one when they go with Josephine, and go shopping. I was disappointed that they couldn't have created another level for making getting up the cliff to her house, or doing something in her house maybe?
But it started in town, where it is raining, and we have to fight the troupe yet again. First up, that bald man, who this time has a large anchor which he uses to create a dust forcefield thingy like before. I almost died of boredom. Then the other woman chucks bread at you, and it's the same. Then you get some grammatical books for Josephine, but Lucafont interuupts by forcing a hopeless load of pirates and crabs against you. Not fun, and the hardest bit of the game.
But then you're done, and you head back. I was really looking forward to the hurricane scenes, because I thought they'd be really, really awesome, but in fact, they sucked really badly. It's about the same for about 15 minutes of gameplay. Jumping from platform to platform to platform on and on and on and on....
You go out, FINALLY, and excited about the sailing scenes, I was glad those boring ones were out of the way. BUT THEN THERE'S NONE AT ALL. You suddenly turn up at Curdled Cave, where Sunny has another decent slide (yay) Then you shoot leeches away, Count Olaf comes, and you end up back at his house in the space of two minutes.
Klaus has a big turn by himself, climbing up the tower, which I found fun. And believe me, it's one tall tower. Lucafont is at the top, dropping barells down on you, which was challenging, which was fun. But however, at one point, windows open above you, and he drops them on you, and when so, there seem to be five different Lucafont's, all acting at once, which seemed stupid. You get to the top eventually, and have a 'thrilling' fight with Lucafont, which in my eyes was boring.
But then the Marvelous Marriage begins, and the POV goes to Klaus' eyesight through the magnifying glass. The first scene was one of the greatest bits of the game. You have to shoot heat at the actor with the marriage certificate, and I found it so funny. The troupe are prancing around randomly on the stage, and Lucafont is spinning around and around and around during all this, dressed as a pirate. HILARIOUS. It may not sound so, but it cracked me up so much. My siblings however, apparently didn't see it the way I did.
Then it's a sailing scene, boring, blah blah, and then it finishes. Olaf escapes, makes a threat with the children, and then there's the credits.
Altogether, 7/10. I enjoyed the logic and most of the gameplay of it, but I hated the troupe fights, and it was too quick and easy.
