I don't know if this has been brought up before, but I have looked. If it has, please ignore this thread. I stumbled upon this item on Amazon, and the picture, as you can see, has Lemony Snicket's name on it. However, when you click on the picture to look at a larger version the name disappears. What is going on? He is also listed as the author, and he is, as we know, not the real author of these books, though he had mentioned them somewhere. The link: www.amazon.com/Bears-Famous-Invasion-Sicily/dp/0060726083/ref=sr_1_1/103-1768350-0878253?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1185254365&sr=1-1What does everyone think?

I believe Lemony wrote the Introduction of the book.

The Bears' Famous Invasion of Sicily is by Dino Buzzati, and was Lemony Snicket / Daniel Handler's favourite children's book; through whatever machinations occur in the dark heart of HarperCollins, he got to write a (very short) introduction and (very long) endnotes to a translated paperback edition of the book. The actual book has no direct connections to aSoUE and was originally written long before Daniel Handler was even born, but Snicket makes a few offhand and inconsequential references to aSoUE in his endnotes (he basically mentions it as though he were alluding to any other book), and it's alluded to in TSS (page 79; Bruce mentions bears that used to live in the Mortmain Mountains, which were so intelligent they were trained as soldiers, but mysteriously disappeared).

You've made me curious now. I looked it up at my library's web site and I'm having it shipped to my local branch to read.

I bought and read it quite a while ago. The story is just so-so, but Snicket's end notes are worth reading.

Yes, I have this. And I agree with Dear Dairy. I expected the story to be better, seeing as how it was DH's favorite, but I didn't really get that into it. The endnotes were quite good, though.

I bought this (at Half-Price Books, no less! And it was so inexpensive (and new!) that I bought one for a friend). Not a fantastic read, but enjoyable. I especially like the pictures.

Wow. At first I thought he wrote it. Or it was fake.

So did I! As I was reading the posts, I thought about posting my opinion that the end notes were better than the book itself, but I already did.
