The Unofficial Rules and Guideline for The Daily Punctilio:
1) Spelling and Grammer: Yes, I don't want to sound like your fifth grade Language Arts teacher but this "counts", pardon the pun. Let's try an example:
"OMG11!1!111 OMG TAHTS SO COL1!1! LOL I LOV3 TG1!11!11 OMG LOL TH3Y LOK FOR TEH SUGAR BOWL!1!1!
That is usually how posts are made at this *cough*
message board Now, what do we learn from this? For one thing, you never graduated elementary school, but what else? What does that post tell us? IT STINKS OF really cool member! Only a NEWBIE types like that. Not only is it hard to understand *Um...excuse me...* It is an uneducated post. A better version of that post would be:
"OMG! That's so cool! I love TGG! They look for the sugar bowl!"
No, at least we can understand it. MAKE DECENT POSTS, SNICKET-EERS! In a recent thread at 667 Dark Avenue, someone posted a link to a translating service which, if you entered anything decent into, would turn it into what a 12-year-old AOLer would type. I suggest typing in some will known text, such as a sentence from a Lemony Snicket book, clicking the translate button, and seeing what you get.
Here's the link:
ssshotaru.homestead.com/files/aolertranslator.html2) "OMG! I LUV COUNT OLAF! HE'S SO FRIGGIN HOT!" and "I LUV LIAM! LIAM YOU ARE SO HOT!"
um...okie...Why make a whole thread on this? What is the purpose? What would people's reply to this be? Probably more hormonal girls will keep on posting how much they love Count Olaf, or Liam Aiken. Do you realize how stupid this sounds? You're in love with a Storybook character? And you think he's hot? and what about poor Mr. Aiken. If he ever saw your thread, which he probably wouldn't, what would he think? He'd probably be scared out of his wits. And secondly, do you think theres a chance in a million that you would actually MEET Mr. Aiken? Nope. Try settleing for more down to earth goals.
Here's a better example of this thread:
Subect: Count Olaf is Hot! Discuss-\
Message: I think Count Olaf is hot! Because of ________.What do you think?
3) "IS LEMONYLUVER STILL ONLINE?
??" well...at leat you can make friends online. So basically, you make this thread so other "interested" people can tell you if LemonyLuver is still online. Why? Because you want to chat/talk with him? Well...look at this scenario
LemonyLuver is online, but is not posting: This probably means she/he has better things to do other than post "I LUV COUNT OLAF/EMILY BROWNING!"
LemonyLuver is offline: Okie...what's the use of posting a thread like that if the person in question is offline? Simple Common sense...I hope you can figure it out
Unsure if LemonyLuver is Offline/Onling but is not posting: Okie...You're not sure if he/she is online or offline...but they are not posting. Can you guess what this means? They've probably realized that there is more to life than staring at a computer screen, have clicked the little red 'X' at the top of the Daily Punctilio because of sheer boredom,or is simply taking a break. We understand that you may be worried about your poor friend who may have downed too many peanut butter and jelly sandwiched and thus is unable to come to the computer, but if they are not replying, don't you think there is a reason? And a thread would not help a peanut butter and jelly stuffed person anyway
4) Useful Threads: *This goes with Rules 2 and 3*
Is your thread useful? Will it benefit anyone? Think of that before you click that little send button. I've always thought of a message board as a place where you can discuss things. Sure, The "I LUV COUNT OLAF/EMILY BROWNING!" will tell everyone you love Count Olaf/Emily Browning, but what else? Try to make educated posts, posts educated people who read Lemony Snicket books would post:
"Have you read TGG? Here is a summary..."
"I don't like Jim Carrey! Here's why"
"Why the movie will rock"
please, please, please for the sanity of the rest of the Lemony Snicket world, try to make posts like that.
5) The Nice-ness factor:
"LEMONYLUV3R U SUK1!11 I HAET U1!!1!1 SHUT UP!1!!! GO GAT A LIEF!1!!!1!! "
As this is in some foreign language, let me help you.
"LemonyLuver you suck! I hate you! Shut up! Got get a life!"
Okie, let's go through this one by one, shall we? "LemonyLuver you suck!" Basically the poster is mad at LemonyLuver, saying they suck. "I hate you!" They don't like them. "Shut up!" Okie...now this makes nosense. You are the one using endless 1's which are supposed to be !'s and you're telling someone else to shut up? "Go get a life!" Now...that makes no sense at all...The only people who make threads like this are the ones who have no life, and have nothing better to do other than insult people.
On a message board, show RESPECT for other people. If someone hates you, dont reply with your Caps Lock glued down and a billion exclamations...Ask why!
However, there are certain situations where this doesn't apply. If someone threatens to hack your e-mail, go ahead and e-murder them. :-D
What do you think? Someone post this in the DP...
