I mean, if Daniel Handler has al;ready finished it then what's the point of holding it back? I mean, I know that Friday the 13th is in OCtober this year but so what? And we should've knewn about 7 years ago how he was leading up to it. Are we stupid or what?

It's not like authors can publish books just as soon as they're done writing them. The publishing process-- getting the book designed and printed and edited and such--takes some time. Also, it's widely suspected that Handler didn't have the whole series planned out from the very start, so we wouldn't have known about the end so long ago. I doubt even Handler knew it then.

I don't even think that Handler knew about VFD when he first started writing. I think that that just came later.

It's possible that he's done research online and looked at what was the most common theory about the upcoming books, and did the opposite of what everyone though. Thats what I did with AWOL. I also doubt Handler had the whole series planned out when he first started it.

I believe I once read an interview with Handler where he said that, when writing each book, he had a plan which he'd deviate wildly from about halfway through. So even he might not have been quite sure just how a book would end or what direction things would take until he'd written it. And indeed, printing, advertisements, distribution etc. take a long time.

When Handler began writing ASOUE, he only planned to write 4 books. But, the books got so popular he decided to continue the series. Thats why VFD doesnt appear until the 5th book.

Exactly. And in another interview Handler said that he doesn't do a set amount of pages a day, he just writes and then stops when he feels like doing so. Anyway, even with the final book being released this year you couldn't have assumed handler was going to release it on friday the 13th, he may have deviated from that just to surprise us. Handler does not appear the sort of author who generally follows a set plan to the letter.

Most authors aren't. Especially not me.

Just so. Which makes it seem ludicrous that he planned the release date for book 13 seven years ago.

True, I don't know about you guys, but the idea of realeasing the end on Friday the thriteenth in october, and in the year when there was two (count them, two) fridays the thriteenth are placed, for a series that is supposed to be filled with treachery, villany and all sorts pf unpleasant things, is absoloutely Brilliant.

I second that! I'd rather wait until then personally. I need the time to do some catch-up after being ASOUEless for 2 years to really enjoy the 13th book!

[shadow=red,left,300][glow=red,2,300]I think that his making us wait was brilliant. Now everybody is even more excited than they would have been if he had fired all the books off in a year.[/glow][/shadow]
