The BB: RE(don't have exact quote on me at the moment..i apologize)
Page 6: "..Mr.Poe removed his top hat."
Note: A top hat of course, like [...] is a very convient place for storing things one wants hidden, such as a small document. Of course, one must be sure to remove the hat carefully.
Note: An early draft of TBB read "..Mr.Poe removed his top hat carefully.."
and TE pg 253:
" Humphrey," Weyden said.
"No." Olaf said with another frown. "There was some arguement about his name, actually, as a baby adopted by his orphaned children also bore the same name.
"Bertrand." Omeros said.
"No." Olaf said, and fowned yet another time. "The adoption papers were hidden in the hat of a banker who had been promoted to Vice Presiden in Charge of Orphan Affairs."
"Mr. Poe?" asked Sadie.
"Yes." Olaf said with a scowl. " although at the time, he was better known under his stage name. But I'm not here to talk about the past......"
So, TE reveals what it was in Mr. Poe's hat, which was one mystery that had been bugging me. I had originally thought it was the parents will, but then I realized that it wasn't much of a secret, and didn't see why it would have left the bank, particularily in the hat of Mr. Poe.
Thoughts?

Whose Adoption papers are you suggesting were in Mr Poe's hat? It can't possibly have been the Baudelaires' as they hadn't adopted any babies at that point so they couldn't have named any such children after their father to have caused confusion about his name. Besides most people generally agree that Bertrand is their father and Olaf clearly states that he is not the one being referred to. It also can't be Beatrice as it clearly says his and besides the Bauds didn't adopt her until after Olaf died. These adoption papers could have been under Mr Poe's hat at any time and could have been for anyone.

Yes, this just proves that Mr. Po was more connected to V.F.D. than we previously realized...
Which side of the shcism do you believe he was on?

The papers must be for someone we never heard of before. It's clear in TE that there are many, many other things going on in the world. But it's a nice foreshadowing of the Baudelaires adopting Beatrice.

There's still more confusion of the timeline in that statement. (I wish I had my books with me!) Didn't Mr. Poe's promotion to Vice-President in Charge of Orphan Affairs occur some time after the events of TBB? And yet the adoption papers that Olaf refers to in that passage would have come from a time before TBB -- right? (since Omeros jumps to the conclusion that they were connected with Bertrand) When Olaf says "at the time," does he mean "at the time he was carrying those particular papers in his hat," or "at the time he was made VP in C of OA"? Or am I wrong about the timing of Mr. Poe's promotion?

I must be missing something here - is it impossible that the papers were actually the Baud's adoption papers, as they were due to be handed over to Olaf after their parents' death? Yes, it would be rather soon after the tragedy, but Mr Poe has always been quite business-oriented. That's what I presumed anyway...

Olaf refers to the promotion as something that had already happened when Poe had the papers under his hat, and as of TEE we've heard no reference to Poe being involved with the theatre or other performance arts (although he was aware of the theatrical term "break a leg" at the end of TBB, but so was I and my experience with the theatre is limited to attending it). I consider it to be an in-joke to BBRE fans; we'll never know what Handler intended when he wrote the BBRE, but this is the best we'll get. I smiled when I read it.

Are we sure he's talking about the same Mr. Poe? It sounds like it at first, but when he says Poe "at that time" (when he had the papers in his hat, after he was promoted to be in charge of Orphan Affairs) was better known by his stage name, it seems to eliminate the Poe we know. I think this is another example of the confusion of similar stories. Our Poe may also have had papers in his hat -- but it's not clear to me we got a clue about it this time.

But two Poes who were both bankers and actors, RockSunner? I dunno . . . Although Handler seems to be showing a fondness for involving two people having the same name -- so, you could be right.

oohhh! ok, in the "not a chapter" of TPP there are some pictures. one of them shoes a man w/ a top hat and a mustache. Then in another picture there is a woman drilling a whole in the wall in front of a vase decorated with eyes. In this picture there is a top hat and mustache lying on the gorund.
