Well then... Could go either way. Sunny's got to go on to talk about her recipes on the radio (according to TBL), which I don't see her doing while on the island, and Violet has yet to return to Briny Beach for a third time or meet the Female Finnish Pirates on the way (and since the Baudelaires are presented as pretty much operating as one unit, the chances are as good for Klaus as the rest of them). Just because a boat sinks doesn't mean that its crew went down with it. Then again, the boat could have sunk on a later voyage and drowned them all then, or Sunny's radio-speech could have been a red herring by Handler, and Violet's future wasn't presented as a dead cert anyway, so it could go either way - and I think that's what we're meant to think, that it could all go either way. Don't forget Hector, Captain Widdershins, and possibly Phil (though it looks like Handler forgot about him, really). They were all swallowed up by the Great Unknown, which, ignoring the metaphor, could mean any of the following: 1. It's a sea monster. It eats and digests them. They are dead. 2. It's a Jonah-esque sea monster, and they're all alive and well in its strangely non-acidic stomach. 3. It's a volunteer submarine. They're all sitting around taking tea and cakes. 4. It's a villainous submarine. All dead. 5. It's a submarine that's on nobody's side, in which case they could be fine, dead, or imprisoned. Again, I think that we're not meant to believe any fate for this lot as being definite. It leaves us to decide the answers for ourselves.

I've always believed that they were taken in by the ? submarine. It's probably a neutral submarine, so anything could have happened to them.

I believe that they got to land, but in the mad confusion that is VFD, they got lost or misplaced or went into hiding.
But my opinion can be swayed.

Same. I actually liked Hooky and the gang for a bit after Olaf said they stole his submarine...

I believe all of them survived. If you want to see a little bit of my theories on the ? ship, read my Fanfiction (banner link). Lemony just likes to keep us guessing, I guess.
With me, though, I was pretty disappointed that one of the Baudelaires didn't die in TE...I was hoping for it...*laughs* I sound so evil!

from what i can tell from TBL the baudelairs got seperated from baby beatrice, but it doesn't specify when, we can assume it was during the boatride back to land from the boatwreck poster, but still somehow the baby survived, was seperated, and grew up to the age of ten, where she started trying to contact lemony in TBL

I like to think of the ? as being totally metaphoric/symbolic, representing the idea that no one, including Snicket, knows exactly what happened to any of them.

I don't think they died. Kit said that WIddershins forgave Fernald and Fiona when they met him and that they left off somewhere, I can't remember the rest. She only mentioned the Quagmires get caught by the ?. Anyways, i think it was the ? submarine form TGG and that it is neutral. So, I think they're fine. Though, if the ship is nuetral they welcome both volunteers and villains...
Why do so many people STILL hate Fiona? I like her and Fernald. I thought that they stole the submarine to find Widdershins or at least help the Quagmires with those eagles. It's never revealed what they did, they only found the Captain again and that's honorable enough for me. Sorry, had to get that out.
lol, this is my first post dealing with the series

...Kit was with Widdershins, Fernald and Fiona (and Ink) when she was shipwrecked; they were on the Queequeg when the SSHAMH fell from the sky and destroyed it, pitching the occupants of both vessels into the ocean. Therefore, Widdershins, Fernald, and Fiona were also in the water when the Great Unknown arrived to take them (Fiona's explicitly stated to have spoken to Kit while they were all floundering). It wasn't just the Quagmires who were taken by the Great Unknown, it was Widdershins, Fernald, Fiona and Hector as well. The only person who's possibly saved is Phil, who Handler apparently forgot about after TGG and never mentioned again (although I generally assume that he's with Widdershins whenever Widdershins gets mentioned in TPP and B13).

I think Handler kind of took the easy way out, there were so many loose ends that he could never tie up so. . . . kill 'em.

Well, Hooky and Fiona may be dead in theory, but I can't say it about Baudlaires&Quagmires. They have escaped death for so many times, so it would be a real disappointment. Even for LS's books...

Hang on... how do we actually know that the ? is a submarine? All that Widdershins said is that there are things in this world too evil to know about... do we have evidence that it's a submarine?
The idea was that there was something out there, worse than Olaf. If we assume that ? is a submarine, then it can't belong to the arson side of VFD, because it's just as evil as Olaf (though perhaps it was the man with no hair and a beard, and the woman with hair and no beard?? They had an aura of menace...)
Or maybe it belongs to Mr Poe. Or worse and more mysterious still, Lemony, or one of the Baudelaire parents (we have no real evidence that either of them died).
I don't think that VK and S died. They are still lost - though maybe not to themselves.
