I mean what is the Great Unknown? is it just Lemonys unique way of saying that they went off and no future info of them was ever found? were they eaten by a huge sea beast? was it a huge sub that saved them or took them captive? give me your thoughts on the "?"

They must have died! ? is just symbolic of the mysteries of death and the afterlife.

I think it's rather a symbol for being unable to know everything. Nobody can ever have all the answers. The Quagmires were sucked into this void of un-knowing, so we can never be sure of what happened to them.

I agree with what Xenial Xylophone said.

I agree with what Tragedy said. I do think I've heard people call Death the Great Unknown. Or maybe it was the Great Beyond. . .

The Great Unknown probably isn't somthing human or Olaf wouldn't fear is as much. It could simply be nothing, and anything that goes near it dissapears into nothing.

It was just Handler's neat little way of wrapping up the series without pulling a Rowling and leaving everything hanging and making all the fans scream "WHAT HAPPENED ANYWAY???"

I think the fact that Olaf doesn't know what the ? is, is what scares him so much.
I think Handler left much more threads hanging than Rowling did. He just tried to cover them up with a unique explanation.

Well, I'm happy with the way he ended it. . .but a special appearance by Quigley would have been nice.

Did anyone see that in the end picture in "The End", that the darkened waves in the drawing look like a "?" ?

Did anyone see that in the end picture in "The End", that the darkened waves in the drawing look like a "?" ? yeah, that's what makes people wonder more about it.After I finished TE and saw the picture,I wondered for a second why it would a picture of the plain sea,but then I saw the '?'.

I like the idea that the Great Unknown just displays how many unanswerable questions there are, and how that if we tried to find the answer to every mystery that the world holds, we'd find more and more questions and be more and more confused until it just became overwhelming. It's a lovely moral, really. But it's still infuriating that he didn't tie up all the loose ends!!!

Some animals such as bats and, if I'm not mistaken, whales use a form of sonar to find their way around.
