Hmmm, thinking on topic, I always thought of Dumbledore similar to the way I think of Ezylryb and Wizard Fenworth: dodgy old men who are father figures towards the main characters.
Dumbledore cared for Harry as a son. Ezylryb took Soren on as his ward. He had a mate, Lil, who was killed in a battle. Wizard Fenworth even looked the same as Dumbledore for me. He was Kale's father figure for a while, and she was his apprentice (in a similar way like Harry was to Dumbledore). He had no wife (I think) but lived with a librarian (Trevithick Librettowit) in the Bogs. The librarian was male, but by the third book was happily married to Taylaminkadot
I don't know. It just proves that Dumbledore followed the lines of two other elderly male ather figures, neither of which (well, knowing Mrs. Paul, this can be said) is homosexual. So in fact, I think the author is just saying it, but it's not believeable for me. Not that I have anything against homosexuals at all. It's just that Dumbledore isn't fitting the pattern that has very similar characters (but each is also unique, nobody could be as gruff as Ezylryb or as hilarious as Fen). Hey, wait a sec... one author copied the other! I think. And I know Kathryn Lasky didn't read the seventh Harry Potter book two years before it was published. Because Ezylryb had a secret history similar to Dumbledore's. He was a soldier known by a different name. He was a scholar. But it took until after his death for all of the secrets to be revealed. Great. Added another book to the list of copied books in Harry Potter. Why why WHY? Never mind me. I'm just tired and mad.

. . .I don't know why JK up and said Dumbledore's gay now. It doesn't have anything to do with the story. It's like she puts in a gay person because if she didn't, people would think she was a homophobe.

I'm not disappointed. It's just another layer to Dumbledore's character. She was going to reveal the spouses of the other teachers, so why not reveal something about Dumbledore?
In other homosexual Harry Potter related news, and something for my fellow Sirius/Remus fans, in a recent interview (see Mugglenet.com for full) David Thewlis who plays Remus Lupin revealed that he was told by Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuaron that Lupin was a "gay junkie" and had unrequited love due to his werewolfness. Thewlis agreed that he eemed succh a character. the film was done in this manner intentionally. There is still hope after all my friends.

I love that, Sora <3
It wasn't like she volunteered the information, she was specifically asked whether dumbles ever found love, it related. She doens't seem like she'd just add that in randomly after the series had ended.
I think it was good of her to not coast over the question, though, becuase there's still a lot of moeny to be made off of the translations of the book taht are yet to come out. Not that she really needs more money, but any money is alwayts good D:
I don't have much else to add D: i've been talking about this since it came out last week. LOL CAME OUT LOL. i know i'm amazing.

In response to the question, she should have said "Dumbledore was in love with Grindelwald." Otherwise, as someone pointed out...the response is just weird. "Was Dumbledore ever in love?" "He was gay."

Isn't that what she said though? That he was in love with Grindelwald? And if she's going to reveal the spouses of the other teachers, when will that happen?

I don't think so. . .I think she just said he was gay, and everyone assumed that meant with Grindewald. Or hoped that was the case, because it tied up a few loose ends.
Has she revealed the spouses of the other teachers?. . .I'm kindof looking forward to seeing who McGonagall is with. XD

I think she said he had an unrequited love for Grindewald. "Dumbledore is gay, actually," replied Rowling as the audience erupted in surprise. She added that, in her mind, Dumbledore had an unrequited love affair with Gellert Grindelwald, Voldemort's predecessor who appears in the seventh book.

She said it was Grindelwald. here's the acual factual transcript: Did Dumbledore, who believed in the prevailing power of love, ever fall in love himself? My truthful answer to you... I always thought of Dumbledore as gay. [ovation.] ... Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was. To an extent, do we say it excused Dumbledore a little more because falling in love can blind us to an extent? But, he met someone as brilliant as he was, and rather like Bellatrix he was very drawn to this brilliant person, and horribly, terribly let down by him. Yeah, that's how i always saw Dumbledore. In fact, recently I was in a script read through for the sixth film, and they had Dumbledore saying a line to Harry early in the script saying I knew a girl once, whose hair... [laughter]. I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter, "Dumbledore's gay!" [laughter] If I'd known it would make you so happy, I would have announced it years ago! ( www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/2007/10/20/j-k-rowling-at-carnegie-hall-reveals-dumbledore-is-gay-neville-marries-hannah-abbott-and-scores-more ) And Pandora, she never said it was unrequited, that was something a reporter added.

That's what I mean. She should have offered the Grindelwald bit BEFORE the gay bit. Because by offering the gay bit before, it's almost as if she's answering the question with the "Was he ever in love?" "He was gay." Rather than "Was he ever in love?" "Yes, with Grindelwald. (Dumbledore was gay.)"

It wasn't in the series because it didn't matter. Exactly.

I did not know until in my Current Events class when we were having an "In the Headlines" quiz, (which is just a quiz on the news you've seen over the weekend) that he was gay. It was a lucky guess, actually, I got the answer right but didn't believe it until I went online to find the truth. I don't really feel any differently about it at all. I'd always pictured him to have had a tragic love with a woman in his younger years, and I think I can stick to that story. Rowling obviously has her own take. We should be allowed to see him as we want. It doesn't matter to me if he's gay. I feel a little bad for Harry, though. Not even he knew.

Harry didn't know a lot of things about Dumbledore. Until the last coma-induced brain explosion, anyway, but asking about his sexuality is probably the last question harry would ask dumbledore, if he had the chance.

Yeah, there's so much beyond that about Dumbledore that we don't know, the man was brilliant and full of mysteries.
