Quigley isn't a real name;it wasn't on behindthename.com.Snicket could have borrowed it.
If anyone else agrees, then I'll put in Wikipedia that Quigley could possible be from HP and the GOF.

Quigley is a real name... It's not very common though, that's probably why it wasn't on behindthename.
OH my gosh.
The boy's name Quigley \qu(ig)-ley\ is of Irish and Gaelic origin. Possibly means "distaff", or "one with messy hair".
Got that from some baby name website... Quigley has messy hair!

Dunno why - I can't remember ever actually meeting a Quigley. Anyhow, you scared me for a second. Also, TAA was published less than two months after GOF [ ], so it must've already been sitting on the publisher's desk by the time GOF came out. No borrowing, rawr.

Yeah, I think there was some talk of this earlier. Besides, Quigley was a last name in GoF and a first name in asoue.
There was also talk of the whole anagram thing being borrowed from CoS, but anagrams aren't exceedingly rare plus Snicket used them starting in trr so I don't think those were borrowed either.

Actually, anagrams were usd in TBB. Al Funcoot wrote The Marvelous Marriage. Off-topic but I thought I'd point it out.

Ah yes, I forgot about that one. So that makes it even more unlikely that that particular literary device was stolen.

No, sorry- it's a real name, even though Behind the Name doesn't include it.

The books were published little more than a month and-a-half apart, GOF coming out on July 8, 2000, and TAA coming out August 31, 2000. Surely not enough time to steal the name, isn't the final draft in long before publication?
Besides, as stated, Quigley is a real name.

If Quigly is a real name, why are we still discussing this?
I'm confused.

Quigley is a real name. It's probably just a coincidence. i noticed the name too when I was re-reading GoF a few weeks ago I think if Snicket borrowed anything from HP (which he probably didn't) it would be the turban Olaf wore. But I doubt it highly. I just think it's funny that both Quirrel and Olaf were both hinding something with a turban.
