The answer is one, for the reasons posted above. Quite an unfair riddle, actually, as I had no idea about the clocks. I thought that it was something to do with winding it up, though. Hadn't a clue what specifically, but I'm glad that I was as right as I could possibly have been.

Unless that's not actually the answer, and there's still some other super secret layer to it.

I think he intended to write a riddle, but he phrased it badly by saying that the clock was set for 9 in the morning. If he just said he set it to go off at 9, we'd have a decent riddle, and one that I think would fool me.

Would you care to explain? If you set the clock to nine IN THE MORNING, as you specified, then it would be thirteen hours.

He meant to say "set it to go off at nine". This alarm clock would go off at nine in the evening as well as nine in the morning.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever used an alarm clock of that sort. I've had a clock radio for as long as I can remember.

I've never even had an alarm clock. I wake up at the right time, and if I don't, my parents wake me. Oh, but they have an alarm clock. It's combined with a tea machine.

That sounds like a great idea, a device that wakes you up and makes caffienated beverages. I think I came up with an idea for something of the sort when I was young, some machine that made coffee with a lot of noisy bells and whistles.
