I'm sorry if this has already been mentioned but I noticed something as I was re-reading the series. In TMM (pg.109) Lemony writes: "My beloved Beatrice, before her untimely death, asked it, although she asked it to late. The question is: Where is Count Olaf?" Now go to Chapter 11 of TAA where Lemony remembers the Masked Ball: "'Beatrice,' I cried, just as the scorpions spotted me,'Count Olaf is-'" I have a feeling these quotes are related to each other but feel free to prove me wrong.

I've noticed that before, but I don't think there's ever been a thread on it.
Now you see, this is one of those quotes which demonstrates that Handler did have some idea of what was going to happen with the story after the first four books. Obviously, though, that's probably greatly changed, since V.F.D. was a post-TMM invention, but Handler will have used it as a hook anyway - just for a different plotline.
There are several options, although all are pretty much speculation (this is in post-TMM continuity, by the way). If we say, for example, that Beatrice is the Baudelaire mother, then it could be a reference to how Olaf visited them on the day of the fire. Or, it could refer to a circumstance where Count Olaf was supposed to turn up somewhere, but was actually doing something villainous instead, like burning down the building when he should have been inside explaining himself. Which applies to my first idea as well.

I've considered the possibility that Olaf was at the Masked Ball. Perhaps he was one of the scorpion-guards.
It seems Handler had some aspects of the Beatrice mystery planned out more or less from the start--that Olaf was involved in her death, for instance.

Lemony sends Sebald the letter with the Sebald code in it that he will be there. Olaf could have figured out the code and gotten there.

I think Lemony (handler) wrote all all the books at the same time. Throughly checked them, and is just selling them at different times. Like LOTR.

^That's not true. When Handler did a little week blog for something or the other, he was mentioning trying to finish TEE before the deadline and he talked of the already published five books...I belive the link was from some Lemony site, I can try and find it but....yeah that's not true.

I think Handler's said things in interviews that imply he didn't write all the books at the same time; for instance, his famous statement that he didn't have the VFD mystery planned out at first, but it came along as he was writing book 5.

We haven't been able to track down that statement for a long time, but it definitely exists. If anyone ever finds it, I'm giong to put it in a big thread in Gloom Looms with a heading in all-caps, and it will be locked and stickied forever, so that everyone can see it.

Hahahaha! How do you know it exists if you've never seen it?

We all distinctly remember reading it somewhere, but now none of us can find a link to an actual interview where this is stated. It's sort of like an urban legend, I guess.
