In relation to this, here's an alleged quote from a Handler book signing last October or so (for The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming), quoted from UE.com (from post #159 by Muchlikeklaus here): --- Mr. Handler: "And which is your favorite book?" Some boy: "The Austere Academy." Mr. Handler: "What?! Forcing poor orphan children to run around a track many many times and listen to horrible concerts? That's your idea of a good time?!" Some boy: *nods and smiles* Mr. Handler: "Well, then, you'd better stay out of movie theaters, because that's the one they're working on next." --- Assuming it's not made-up, further evidence that Handler, at least, is confident there'll be another movie - hopefully one he'll have more of a role in, if they don't fire him from writing it again. Supposed leaked excerpts from various drafts of the first movie's screenplay by Handler show much more ambition and mystery.

If they are indeed making the next film with the Austere Academy it is likely they'll be doing a three book thing again.

I'm not sure if there is a squel in the process. But if there is, I think 4-6 would be in the 2nd film. For Film the Third , they should put 7 and 8. But how about books 9-13, those might be hard to place as films. ??

It's difficult. TVV is a sensible place to have a cliffhanger ending, since the entire series changes after that, but it'd sure be difficult to arrange the books into films in order to have TVV at the end, unless they were to have TMM-TAA, and TEE-TVV. Even cutting TMM, as has been suggested, and just going TAA-TEE-TVV would be very difficult, as it was clearly hard enough fitting the first three books into one film (although I think the first film could have been a little longer). It's also difficult to decide how to arrange the whole "Snicket file" arc, as in TSS that plotline is very hastily discarded in favour of the sugar bowl. Do you end a film with TCC and start another with TSS, jarring newcomers with the change in MacGuffin, or do you lead the Snicket file into the sugar bowl? It might be better to rewrite 8-10 to remove the Snicket file entirely and put the focus on the sugar bowl from the start, although that'd make it even more difficult to cope when the sugar bowl's contents are never revealed (unless you make it clearer in TPP that the sugar bowl's story comes to an end with the taxi driver).
But for a second film, at least, I think it'd be a good idea to start with the Baudelaires being thrown out of Lucky Smells Lumbermill - it reminds audiences (after the several-year gap) of the status quo, fans don't get upset at TMM being cut, and we all get a brief glimpse of what a movie version of TMM would have looked like. Insert references to TMM's plot as in-jokes to readers, and regular jokes to viewers ("And then there was the time Count Olaf dressed up as a woman..." etc.).
I seem to recall hearing that Nickelodeon wanted the aSoUE movies to form a trilogy. Good luck to 'em. To do that they'd probably have to have the second movie form TAA, TEE and TVV, with TVV taking the most cuts - "Count Olaf" probably arrested when the Baudelaires first arrive, for example, possibly in the process of "kidnapping" (rescuing) the Quagmires. Then for the third movie, skip everything to do with the Snicket file and have a movie of TSS, TGG if they can manage it, and TPP, with The End as a baffling five-minute post-credits scene. If they were to make a "new" trilogy all at roughly the same time in the near future, though, for a total of four movies, they could probably reinstate more of the books.
As for whether there should be a sequel - the visuals of the first movie were great. I'd really like to see what they'd make out of the scenes and costumes from the later books. Some of the humour of, say, TCC might not work out quite so well off the page, though.
Edit: Oh yeah. After the brilliant opening of the first movie with The Littlest Elf, perhaps a future movie could open with the cast doing a version of The Luckiest Kids in the World! instead.

Maybe they're trying to make it extra-special for fans. Who knows? Obviously I'd be thrilled for the next one. I hope the music and art dept. do a good job, if they're making another one.

And in addition to that, here's the word from Daniel Handler himself, speaking at an appearance in France - many thanks to Doctor Orwell for detailing all this, and go check out the thread for yourself, Handler excels himself. --- Q: I just wondered who was your favorite character in the series... A: Oh, I tend to give a special place in my heart to the very minor characters... The ones mentionned only one to three times in a sole book. Who's yours ? Q: Georgina Orwell... A: Oh yeah. We're actually trying to fit her in the second movie at the moment... Q: What ? There's actually going to be a second movie ? A: At the time being it's mostly talking and discussion about it, but it's not at all ruled out. ---

I've been waiting for a sequel and I'd love for there to be one..but if they use the same actors they are going to be so much older by the time it comes out.

Of course another problem with narrative is the jarring feeling of constantly having Olaf turn up in disguise; it'll feel like three or four mini-movies stitched together.
One idea I had of overcoming this was cutting Olaf out of TEE: would the plot still work?
