I still can't figure out how Beatrice died. I always assumed it was the baudelaires smother and she died in the fire. but twice in the series (once in the wide window and another time in ersatz elevator) it mentions her being carried away by a large eagle. jerome never says if she was picking up by an eagle when they went hiking, but it's a close relation. it is possible that they rescued her from the eagle, but what do you think?

There's no indication that anyone died in the eagle incident; Jerome in particular would probably present it under less light-hearted circumstances if that was the case. It must have been one of many adventures in her life.

Who is she really? An interesting question. I find Beatrice very strange and suspicous. I really dislike her.

I gathered that she survived the fire, but was murdered by Esmé for stealing her sugar bowl. Since I'm not 100% about that, can anyone verify it?

Personally I would prefer if the fire survivor was Berthrand.

I gathered that she survived the fire, but was murdered by Esmé for stealing her sugar bowl. Since I'm not 100% about that, can anyone verify it? It's impossible to say. There are indications that somebody survived the Baudelaire fire, but they're not conclusive and don't add up, and The End seems to be trying to tell us that both parents are dead anyway; Beatrice having survived for a while and then dying would be sort of redundant. Esmé's involvement is that she controlled the passageway from the Baudelaire mansion to 667 Dark Avenue, and as such could presumably have cut it off as an escape route, or lain in wait for anyone trying to escape (not that there are any bodies in that dark corridor). Personally my own theory has been for a while that the survivor is Olaf - the only reason he's not usually considered is because arsonists generally aren't - but there is no answer. But anyway, to cut a long story short, she probably died in the fire.

Maybe the taxi driver from TPP was Berthrand and not Lemony.

I find it hard to believe that he wouldn't have immediately thrown off his disguise and embraced his beloved children rather than driving away to let them face a murder trial. But I'm sure some explanation could be contrived.

It is not my theory. I just heard it somewhere.

Well, Bertrand is kind of a jerk, when you think about it. Didn't he murder Olaf's parents?

^^ Yeah, sometimes I wonder that, what the whole story of the poisoned darts?

Kit tells us she slipped Beatrice a box of poison darts before Esme could catch her, during the intermission of the opera La Forza del Destino, with Bertrand presumably helping her (it's implied Lemony assisted in the plot as well: "...Just as I wondered, on that fateful evening long ago, as I hurried out of the opera house before a certain woman could spot me..."). It's pretty much certain that these are the poison darts used to murder Olaf's parents, as he tells us they were the weapon that made him an orphan.

Yes, but were the Baudelaire parents who commited murder?

That's the solution strongly implied, yes.

I've always thought Bertrand was a very shady character myself.
