Oh, yes, certainly--I meant to only to draw up a list of likely candidates; further than that would indeed be difficult without more information.

Just to be clear, that is my official position on this. A speculation thread will one day be appropriate, but not until we have either collected significant pieces of information, or a few more minor pieces of information. Right now, the sort of hypotheses we'd be making would be exactly the same we would make if we'd had no information on a new series at all. We need something original.

Let's hope that the new series will be released in Greece as well....

Given that it's a new series by a successful children's author, I would imagine it'll get published anywhere that ASoUE got published, and maybe farther afield, too - unless ASoUE originally sold poorly in those locations. But I would take a guess that if Greece got ASoUE, it should get the new series, too.

I'm so excited for the new series-maybe some of the old mysteries will be solved/elaborated on?! Then again I'm fairly certain new ones will be revealed. It is also worth noting, that ASoUE was originally going to be four books long- ended up being thirteen books! So this new series may be longer than we think.

The difference with ASoUE is that Handler always thought the series should be thirteen books long, but genuinely didn't believe the series would sell, and that's why he was contracted for a provisional four books at first. It sounds like a very different situation with the new series; it's probably considerably better-planned, if he can say at this point how many books there will be, and also announce that years in advance of the publication of the first. But for that very reason, you're right to advise caution; series do sometimes creep to greater lengths than they were planned for - consider Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Trilogy Cycle. Consider also the Earthsea trilogy quartet cycle - although that was because Ursula Le Guin kept on wanting to write more, not because the story needed more.

If you're interested, you can locate all we know about the new series here. It will indeed be released sometime in 2012; we don't know when, but it probably won't be immediately. We'd have heard something if it was going to be released, say, January.

I'd forgotten that 2012 was so near! Hopefully the publicity for the new series will start soon, although I agree that if they were to be released in January we'd have heard something about them already. Let's just hope it's not a late 2012 - although even if it is, I'd expect a new Snicket series to start being hyped early. I'd guess we can start looking forward to more information in January? When it's 2012 for real, and people are looking forward to the new year. Unless they're set for December or sometime like that.

I would hazard a guess to Friday 13th of July 2012.

Ah, if there's a Friday 13th, then that would definitely be tempting to marketers, and halfway through 2012 seems a pretty reasonable time for one book to have been finished, considering Handler's been talking about the new series for years. But with that said, the date might not apply so well to the new series; ASoUE of course had a big thirteen gimmick, with thirteen books planned, thirteen chapters to every book, and many more thirteens along the way. The new series will have four books, and who knows how many chapters they'll have. It's definitely worth considering, though.

I'm really hoping they'll be out, at least, mid-way through 2012, like you say. But if the first book came out in winter that would be nice, it would take my mind off being stuck in the house since we got so much snow in Britain last year, didn't we?

The last two years I think we've had quite snowy winters at unexpected times, although to be honest I couldn't say it kept me any more stuck in the house than I usually am. Still, it'd be nice to curl up with a good book again; I don't often read one I'm enthusiastic to read from beginning to end in one sitting, but Snicket can certainly handle that. Although this does make me think of the release schedule; how often can we expect to see the books of the new series? Although I think they'll probably be separated by about a year each, just as the last few books in ASoUE were; that seems pretty standard for a lot of other children's and young adult series, too. When we learn the release date of the first one, we can probably take a pretty good guess at the release dates of the remaining three. After five years, maybe nearer six by the time the first new book is out, it'll seem quite strange to be reading a proper Snicket novel again - although, brunch, do I get the impression you only read them relatively recently?

I read them when I was about nine. I am thirteen now. The reason you perhaps get that impression, is because I make a habit of re-reading the series over and over again, so that way I don't forget much and I can continue to enjoy them. I do read other books, but I try at least, to read one chapter of the 170 in ASoUE at least once a day. Right now I'm re-reading TVV.

A year between books sounds reasonable. That period should also give us adequate time to carefully and systematically analyze each detail presented within the new installments. Speaking of promotional material, though, does Little Brown have an AuthorTracker equivalent? That is to say, an updating service used to notify readers of upcoming projects by their favorite authors? How do they plan to capture the old Snicket fans, or will they be aiming toward a new audience all together? I can see a negotiation with HarperCollins feasible (as hype for the new series might promote hype for the old).
