I don't recall seeing Rhys Darby in anything else (I'm a little busy, so I don't have time to imdb him or read the interview), but since's he's from New Zealand, my initial guess is that he's Bruce.

You have Probably seen rhys darby before he was the lizard that turned into a human in the new xfiles season also the manager of Flight of the Concords. Plus heaps of other stuff. I don't think he is Bruce since they have past TRR and gerardo barcala Has been listed as playing him.

Oh, right, I'd forgotten about Bruce already being cast. I haven't watched either of the things you mentioned (though judging solely from what you said, X-files suddenly sounds like a much better show than I thought it was), but I've watched some other TV shows and movies, so if he's one of 'those' actors, then I've probably seen him.
Also, casting one of those actors who seem to have a minor role in everything seems like another good omen for the scale of the production. It's often not so much that they're in a lot of stuff, but rather that the stuff they're in tends to be prominent things (I suppose - come to think of it, I don't actually know more than the average person about TV production, so what I just said was actually pure guesswork).

He badly needs to lift his pun game, but other than that, this is pretty cool of him. And uh oh, no confirmation of season 2 yet.

Yeah, we likely won't know about a renewal until after it airs, but at this point I'm guessing undoubtedly it'll get a second season. The reality is that they picked a very long book series, obviously from the get go they were wanting a show that they could get several seasons out of. Likely they already have some things planned for a second season should the numbers be good. Netflix does like to plan things out in advance after all. Too, they've put so much time and money into developing this show for years that even if it's only moderately successful they'd do another season just to get their money's worth out of it (I imagine they contracted all the main players for several seasons). Also, the fact that they went to such lengths shows they have faith that this will have good viewership. Not to mentions this already has a built in audience, especially since in recent years the movie has become sort of a cult film.
I'm thinking Alfre Woodard is probably playing Aunt Josephine. Which, honestly, I think has the potential to be amazing casting. I really like her as an actress and I can see her playing that part very well.

Netflix is very generous with its second seasons, so I don't think it'll be a problem. The only notable Netflix original series that has technically "ended" at this point is Hemlock Grove, and that got three seasons. Even Flaked and F is for Family got renewed.
I'm a little surprised that Netflix didn't order more than one season in the first place, considering the length of the source material. I'm guessing they were a little nervous because of the budget on this show, but as long as it gets good buzz, chances are good for renewal.

I don't think it's common practice to order multiple seasons for new shows (It happens from time to time, but usually multiple season renewals are for already established shows, usually nearing the middle or end of their run). Even though Netflix didn't order multiple seasons I would guess that the initial planning for this season included plans for additional seasons. Probably the main actors signed multiple season contracts to begin with and I wouldn't be surprised if some writing for the second season is already taking place, outlines at the very least.

also, something I've noticed about Netflix is that they seem to always wait until after the season is aired to announce another season. For some shows its taken months, such as Sense8. Recently however I read an article saying that Netflix is looking to increase the amount they're currently spending on creating new content. I think the chances of another season are very high unless the series just doesn't creatively come together, which I don't see happening with Daniel helping the production along.

when has any TV producer in history announced a second season before the first had aired?

That might just be an inference from her being in those photographs with other cast members at Barry Sonnenfeld's place - the ones which also included Cobie Smulders and Taran Killam.

Also I think Game of Thrones was already in production of series 2 before Series 1 aired.
