I sympathise with you Misery. There is some good character development and examination in some fics (usually someone else's point of view during a particular scene, or like, a flashback or something), but it's so hard to find in the sea of crappy romance. I WANT TO READ ABOUT SNAPE'S TORTURED SOUL!!! Which is why I generally dislike fanfic, and only read it for kicks. And Misery, don't forget the Weasley/Weasley/Weasley/all the rest of the Weasleys! Ugh. There are some places I just don't go... that's one of them.
But yeah, Pandora, there IS good fanfic. It's just so hard to find... The Sugarquill is pretty good, for HP fanfic, if you're into H/G and R/H and very routine but well-written stuff. *shrug*

There are a lot of fics about Remus's tortured soul--because he can't snog with Sirius, and there's a lot of about Snape's tortured soul--because he's miserable about not being able to get Harry alone in the dungeons. -_-

Ugh, I hate HG/SS. Blech.
I think I was tricked into liking smut. There's barely any Snape het at all (if you don't want HG/SS), so I had to start reading the Snape slash. Most Snape slash is also smut, so.. yesh (you'd be surprised how much Snape Slash Smut there is on the internet, and just how corrupted I am because of it >_< ).
I understand where slash-haters are coming from, though... even if you support homosexuality, it might be hard to read about your favourite same-sex characters involved romantically with each other.
What bothers be is RPS (real person slash). Like I've been to site for Johnny Depp/Orlando Bloom and Alfonso Cuarón/Dan Radcliffe. Imagine how embarrassing it would be for them if they knew...

Oh wow... yeah. That's a little too much, there.
I absolutely cannot stand SS/HG! UGH! IT MAKES ME SO MAD!!!! Okay, though... I can't stand most Snape/student fics anyway.
I got away from HP fanfic awhile ago... I haven't read any in a long time... wow. But I hated fanfiction.net in general, and I didn't put much effort into finding archives...
Holmes/Watson is my favourite pairing of all time. Because I love to speculate about Holmes' repressed homosexuality. You kow... there are so many suggestive lines... and Holmes is so... trying to hide the fact that he'd gay... you can see it in his... eyes? His... eyes that you imagine because he's not real? Yeah. That's right. You know it. No, but... what fun. And Enjolras/Grantaire is great, too. Generally, fics about the homosexuality of the ami(e?)s are funnily great, though...
I'm gonna shut up.

boo on frodo/sam! they love each other as friends, like a close friend. friendships that girls usually have, ya know? like you can hold your girl friend's hand and it'll be ok, but a guy can't do that. plus sam gets married to rosie in the end (and i don't want to hear anything about him being bi, alright?) they love each other as friends and some people just don't get that.

People could debate these relationships 'till the end of time... I refuse to read any fanfic about incest, or when there's an adult and some teenager, or any really graphic sex scenes... sorry... but EWW. I guess I can see where you're coming from with the "don't mess with the author's characters" bit... I really wouldn't want to see certain characters of mine together with certain other characters of mine. My friend once commented to me that deeply emotional fanfics are romances or wrist-slashing self pity trips. I haven't read enough to really know though  Just to put my opinion in... I wouldn't want to see Frodo and Sam together at all. I mean, there was the scene in the book when Sam kisses Frodo's forehead and it's so heart-wrenching, because this is as deep as friendship gets... devotion to someone and truly caring about them. If they're in a relationship, all that is blown out the window, because people who aren't in love kiss each other all the time, and it's merely for the thrill they get from kissing someone they're attracted to. Blah. Meh, I'm tired, sorry if I make no sense  |

I hate slash. Mostly due to my view on being gay and all. But it does kinda put me out. I stumbled upon a Lupin/Black one once and it really distrurbed me. It kinda makes me mad when people degrade my favorite characters. But I guess to them, they arent degrading anything, just writing a story. So, many different views.

I dunno, JM, why don't you ask God? Honestly. I find the Bible-beating "God hates the gays. The gays burn in hell" thing so stupid. Maybe because I'm Atheist and the "bible" and "Satan" remind me of the bogeyman. But I see nothing wrong with being gay. Gays are people, too, and slash fics are not one of the terrible things in the world.

god doesn't HATE gays. love the sinner, hate the sin. if people present it that way, that's their fault, not god's. oh and that part in another post when you mentioned snogging.... can i just say that i find that funny cause there's a fanfic where they say that a lot, it's really funny. not the snogging but the word ;D

I ADORE slash. I'm one of those irritating girls who slash everything they like. Well, I've gotten better about it lately. Mildly.
Everyone keeps complaining about disgusting this and we should get rid of it that, when they don't realize that, gosh gee willikers, why don't we just kind of not look at it? I mean, who exerts such energy whining about some person somewhere saying "I think suchxsuch is good, yay!"
