I don't think Poe is deliberately in cahoots with Olaf, but I think he is dumb enough to be manipulated by either side of the schism

*slight spoiler*
I think that Mr. Poe is a villian because it specifically says something like: "...evil girlfriends, b----(don't remember what this says because I don't have the book with me) bankers are the cause of all injustice in this world!"

The word was "bungling," and it has nothing to do with villainy - it means "To work or act ineptly or inefficiently," and as I'm sure you know, "ineptly or inefficiently" are words which here mean "stupidly."

Book 12 spoiler:
"...And ridiculous Mr. Poe, who arrived just hours ago to investigate a bank robbery. Ha!"
"Those people don't count," Klaus said. "They're not associates of yours."
"They might as well be," Count Olaf replied. "They've been an enormous help..."
It looks to me like Olaf admitted here that Poe is not his associate directly, just someone who has been an "enormous help" because of his stupidity.

I just wanted to say, since I was posting this in the triptych thread in Gloom Looms. This is slightly ambiguous, as I'm not sure myself.
Fact 1: The outfit that Mr. Poe is described to wear (plus in the movie) is also the Operagoer disguise.
Fact 2: This has been discussed more than ever, but the TBBRE said the "carefully" taking off hat bit. That whole book/whatever wasn't as subtle as the Series, but still confusing.
And an opinion: It's odd for me to imagine Poe as an evil person.

I find the fact that Mr.Poe is or was evil blatantly obvious, but in the present books, i do not believe he is, i think he is trying to avoid it all, i personally believe that he has been trying to avoid everything since the Schism.

Book 12 spoiler,
If his only motive for being at the hotel is to investigate a bank robbrey, then it seems to me he is neither a villain nor a volunteer. He seems oblivious to the V.F.D.

I have a question. If Poe is, indeed, clueless, who is You-Know-Who(the letter to his sister in the UA)?

That is a question which may never be answered. Speaking frankly, I think that Handler made quite a few things in the U.A. to be rather ambiguous, in case he wanted to take the story in a different direction later, or to lead people off the right track.

How else would olaf know the whereabouts of the Baudalair children? Hopefully, everyone reading this has read book twelve. But anyway, the bearded man and the woman were working with Justice Strauss, who knew where the Baudelaires were. The bearded man and the woman then gave the information to Olaf.
