Right - at first I thought the significance of those telephone poles was that the Baudelaires wouldn't be able to call from Caligari Carnival (rememeber their call got disconnected) but then in The Grim Grotto, Snicket reminded everybody of the fact that telegrams travel through telephone poles. Thus, as you said, we can rule out the telegram evidence. (Also, don't forget how Eleanora Poe told Mr. Poe to ignore all telegrams to his bank. He was simply, again, manipulated.)

As I just read the thread in Conflicting Conjectures :: Is Mr. Poe working with Olaf? - Submitted by PJ. I personally think Mr.Poe is working for Olaf- he told poe that he would pay him off later after he has the children, but really he will set fire to his home. hey, it's just a theriory, eh? Not just a theory. A very interesting theory. I've become a believer myself that Poe is working for Olaf (voluntarily). Now I'm beginning to believe that maybe O threatened him. That does sound very O-like.

It's important to note that VFDers can have non-VFD friends, like Jacques and Jerome. Hence, Mr Poe wouldn't have to be a volunteer to be invited to a VFD dinner party. I thought Jacques was a VFD member...?

What Antenora meant was that Jacques, a VFD-er, had a friend, Jerome, who wasn't a VFDer. It is clear the two were acquaintances due to the letters they wrote to each other in the Unauthorized Autobiography.

In page 130 of book the twelfth, it reveals that Mulctuary money management may be Related to the series more than one might think. Since Poe works for M.M.M., that means that...

Sorry if this has been discussed earlier in the thread:
According to the nameless novel page 130, it seems that Mrs. Bass robbed Mulctuary Money Management specifically, and probably for some VFD purpose, not just for money. So MMM is most likely very likely connected with VFD, possibly as a hiding place for things like evidence, or - aha! This just came to me - Mr. Poe is the banker who watches all of the VFD members' fortunes. We know he watches over the Baudelaire fortune, why can't he just be the VFD banker? So that's why he watches over the Baudelaire estate, and why he might not know enough to keep the kids away from Olaf in the first bok, and why he doesn't want to get involved. Thus, MMM is the VFD bank, and that's why Mrs. Bass robbed them!
Maybe?

yeah well the baudelaires have a mysterious uncle (possibly dead) why wasnt the orphans put in his care baucase all the gaurdians seems to have tomething to do with vfd the reason mr poe ignores the baudelaire pleas is that durung the whole plot it seems to point that adults should listen to kids but don't

yeh i remeber reading UA and he was at the restaurant i think it was the anxious clown. and th clown goes up to them and says "i didn't know this was a sad occassion" (which was code for something that i am forgetting) and Mr poe had no idea what he was talking about, this proves that he is not apart of VFD. But i think that Mr poe would have an important revelation to make.

I believe Mr. Poe is working with Olaf. i back this up with Mr. Poe is banking top dog. Esme Squalor is the citys sixth most important financial advisor. How could they not know eachother? So I'm guessing they're friends and Esme asked Mr. Poe to let her adopt the orphans so she could give them to Olaf. What do you think?

I think one of them might have mentioned knowing the other once, or something like that... They'd probably at least have heard of each other (especially Poe of Esmé, although Esmé probably doesn't pay much attention to things which aren't useful or in).
In TSS - I think; it could have been TCC or even THH - I think Esmé mentioned using one of the Baudelaires to "force" Mr. Poe to give her and Olaf the Baudelaire fortune, and this was while they believed the Baudelaires (with the possible exception of Sunny, if this was while they believed Violet and Klaus to be dead) to be out of earshot, and I can't see why she'd really have been lying if nobody but her villainous cohorts were around (or if she believed that Sunny's position was hopeless). But I can't remember what book this was in.

I think you're referring to the car's journey up the Mortmain Mountains in TSS. Esmé didn't need to hide anything because she thought Sunny was speaking a strange, foreign language and she was a useless baby.

I think that Mr.Poe may indeed be clueless...however...in the unathorized autobiography, he recieves a telegram (that he never read) where his sister is actually in a cell...therefore the person he believes to be his sister is a fake...he could be telling HER where the beaudelaires are/were...and she may have been olivia...

I haven't yet decided what I think about Poe. At times I think he may be on the "dark side," but other times I just think that he's too stupid to know that. That could be part of his facade, though.
