As I just read the thread in Conflicting Conjectures :: Is Mr. Poe working with Olaf? - Submitted by PJ. I personally think Mr.Poe is working for Olaf- he told poe that he would pay him off later after he has the children, but really he will set fire to his home. hey, it's just a theriory, eh?

True. I do believe he is or may be working with Olaf. I remember reading in the Unauthrorized autobiography, when Mr. Poe, is out at lunch with his sister, that the last time he want to that one cafe (sorry I forgot the name), his friend turned out to be a villain...

I don't really believe that Mr. Poe is working with Olaf. I think he is just another dim-witted adult who can't/won't help the Baudelaires.

yeah I think one of the massages in the books is that the majority of people who do the wrong thing, do it because they are foolish and do not understand etc...not because they are evil....or something like that

A lot of adults in the series unwillingly help the villains because they don't take action, or are simply too stupid.
As for Mr Poe: I've considered the possibility that he's telling Olaf where to find the children; Lulu can't be entirely reliable because she just collects random papers blowing by. However, this also works if Olaf has spies at the bank. Maybe Eleanora finds out where the children were sent, when Lulu can't.

He may be evil..... or maybe he's just stupid, forgetful, and easily brainwashed.

True true. It is possible that he's been the one telling Olaf where the children have been. I wouldn't be surprised if he called up Olaf and told him he saw the children get into a cab with Kit. But isn't it ironic how when the children come back to Briny Beach, he's there too?

If Poe was working for Olaf there would be no need for Lulu at all. Olaf would just go straight to the source.
Mr. Poe is just interested in banking and too busy to entertain what he thinks are the whims of children. It's convenient to have a clueless character likes this. Besides, he arrested Olaf in the first book, and he tried to arrest Olaf in books to come after Olaf's disguise is blown. If Olaf is employing Mr. Poe they're both doing a really good job acting to have kept this a secret for so long, and Olaf is a terrible actor.
The most I would believe is that Olaf is tricking Poe, which has happened already since Poe believes the children are murderers.
Yeah, its odd he was at the beach. But he got a telegram (I'm forgetting how this worked right now because its almost 4:00 AM) telling him to be there. Plus it was an interesting twist in the story, almost giving the children a chance to make a different decision than the one they had in the first book- to follow mr. Poe. It seems like Book 11 they might finally be with some level-headed adults.

I hope so.
It seems to me that Olaf is using Mr. Poe as a pawn without Mr. Poe's knowledge.

It seems to me that Olaf is using Mr. Poe as a pawn without Mr. Poe's knowledge. That would be my best guess. Poe isn't that intelligent when he is face to face with Olaf himself, so it must be assumed that it would be relatively simple for one of Olaf's henchmen to trick Poe into telling them where the children were without Poe noticing.

Didn't we have a thread on this, too? It's not sinister to be misguided That's what I think. Misguided and manipulated, just like his sister. I don't think he's telling Olaf where the Baudelaires are, though.
