I looked over my newspaper clipping and magazine artical interveiwing Daniel Handler. And in both he said that he is using Gothic story telling for ASOUE.

definetly the entire book series deal with gothic elements thrown in, it has a somewhat similiar feel to that of Edward Gorey. I like how both Handler, and gorey, manage to use humour in their books, while still upholding the gothic, dark, feel to them.

[glow=red,2,300]I picked dark, because it's one of the reasons why I love these books. [/glow]

Dark storylines. The kind that parents don't like their kids reading. And the kind of humor that young'ins wouldn't get.

The writing style would be "Gothic" and the drawings look like if they're influnced by the German Expresionists a famous movie that uses German Expresionism would be Nightmare Before Christmas ( i lked that film the minute it came out, i'm a long time fan!!!!not like those newbies....grumble grumble) and i clasify the books as Black Humer. I <3 black humer. i love it!!! And also how the books are made, they look rather "goth". there's my two cents.

The books have a gothic and victorian feel to them. It is also very dark which is why I love it too! ;D
I am also wondering what year (time period) the story takes place in...

Not gothic, not at all. Gothic is like this: The books are like this: They have been known to make me cry though. Oh how I cried when Uncle Monty died... I really did weep. Well, somewhat.

I could see how the books may be described as gothic, but it doesn't quite fit. Much of the atmosphere is in line with proper gothic novels, but, well, these books are black comedy. So, grim, yes. Gothic, no Exactly

besides. it's called A Series of Unfortunate Events. Not a series of happy-go-lucky-events

It's not genuinely Gothic, but I think that Handler alludes to the Gothic era on purpose in the books.
