Hey! They're no sesame street either. They are definitely dark. Not the most gothic but as the books go on it's getting darker and darker.

the books are SO not gothic. Violet wears a purple drees with a ribbon in her hair and if you ask me i dont think that gothic at all. and klaus wears a kind of suite thing and it is kind of brown and sunny wears a white little jumpsuite thing so i really dont think they are gothic at all.

Of or relating to a style of fiction that emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate. Source. I think you are thinking of the wrong "gothic."

Just because it involves several deaths, numerous fires, much child abuse, a lot of robbery, tons of torture, a little bit of adultery, and boat-loads of depression doesn't make these books gothic. But there are a lot of goths who do like them. And Violet does look like a major goth in the movie, but I like it. I would consider these books as a dark comedy/drama. The scenery of the movie, however, does kinda look a little gothy. the books are SO not gothic. Violet wears a purple drees with a ribbon in her hair and if you ask me i dont think that gothic at all. and klaus wears a kind of suite thing and it is kind of brown and sunny wears a white little jumpsuite thing so i really dont think they are gothic at all. But in the movie, which I think they look way more realistic in, Violet has a big brownish grayish blackish dress with fish-net lace stringee thingees, and high-heel boots. Klaus doesn't look like a super GEEK! And even Sunny looks cooler with the tiny belts on her sleeves.

ok, just my opinion. Some people think gothic is all sad and depressed and hung over on satan and stuff, which its not. Its just a style or a way of living. It can mean many things. Going back to the middle ages was the gothic era, which some of the buildings have kind of an effect on it. My opinion on the books is that they are very gloomy, hence the unfortunate events. It is also a depressing situation that the baudelairs are in. Overall i would call the books what people think up in their head. If you picture the story as to be bright and filled with sun light, then, let you think that, even though that would be odd. Or, if you think like me, and you think that the books are dark and depressing, then thats what you think. Im not trying to say ' This is how the books are, and thats final '. Im just stating my opinion. And maybe some other people agree with me.

I think the only reason people think these books are gothic is because the "unfortunate events" that occur and all the sadness and despair.

I don't think the books are Gothic, nor dark. Maybe odd, and I wonder where Handler comes up with the ideas. Gothic no, odd yes.

I'd describe the books as mock-gothic.
