While the Hooky in the books is addicted to coffee, at least this Hooky is not.

That's just when he mentioned drinking coffee a lot, and when maps were mentioned. He could have marked a map at any time, though. Maybe Fernald tried to mark something with coffee, but because he has hooks, its a bit hard to do it. He had his hooks for a very long time, so he seems to control it very well enough, though.

I'm pretty sure he lost his hands in the Anwhistle Aquatics fire, or at least that's implied.

Off-topic: That's a very complicated question which probably requires a whole thread to itself, and indeed probably did after TGG.

Easy. I distracted him with coffee. As well as my beautiful womanly ways. Well you do have that certain charm. I think he's just addicted to it. or maybe it's some sort of code....

I have a theory the detectives Smith and Jones are Fernald in disguise.

Both of them? At the same time?
It is reasonable to assert that the detectives Smith, Jones, and Smithjones are evidently pseudonyms employed by forces inimical to truth in journalism (though questions remain about the Lucky Smells incident), but attempting to confidently identify any one of them as any one associate of Olaf's strikes me as a challenging endeavour.
