I think I found the interview/article: home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=79327&ran=202096His next book, the 12th in the 13-book series, will be out in the fall. The 13th book, he says, will have a twist.
“Some people have already figured it out. I’ll give you a clue. It involves Beatrice. In fact, that clue is in the books everywhere. It’s all right if everyone figures it out. I didn’t write these books in order to be subtle.’’ The "not being subtle" statement could apply to many things besides Beatrice, since it's made as a general statement. Why, that just backs up my theory that Beatrice will die at the end of the series. How so, exactly? I also think it possible that Beatrice dies at the end(or even, possibly, in book 12) and that Lemony's writing the series long after the events have taken place.

it stands for volunteer fire department, mainly. trust me. i've read the books more than anybody. [glow=orange,2,300]Right, how many times is that? I doubt it'll be Volunteer Fire Department cause that's what everyone's expecting and I think that Lemony used that to distract us from the real meaning, I really liked Antenora's bird training theory.[/glow] the bad beginning= 7+ the reptile room= 6+ the wide window= 6+ the miserable mill= 8+ austere acadamy= 6+ the ersatz elevator= 8+ the vile village= 6+ the hostile hospital= 8+ the carnivorous carnival= 8+ the slippery slope= 8+ the grim grotto= 9+

Dante please lock this for me. No. This is our current major thread for V.F.D. theories. It would be wrong to lock it.

I agree with antenora, VFD stands for quite a few different things/divisions/materials and other things used by the organization, but I'd say the overall organization including all divisions and all things it uses would still be 'Volunteer Fire Department' although I was once an ardent supporter of the dead 'volunteer fire detectives' theory.
And the twist at the end could be that Beatrice was in fact alive throughout the events of the series, but does in fact die in book 13.

Thanks. The only problem I'm having is figuring out if Lemony KNOWS she's alive throughout the series and says she's dead because he saw her die during book 13, or if he thinks she's been dead throughout the series...

I want to know wether "volunteer fire department" is one of the divisions of the organization, or is the main name of it. Anyways I think that another branch of the organization, or if not the name of the organization, should involve the word 'fortune'...I think it would be pretty neat because of all the rich kids, and fortunes stolen etc, etc

I think Volunteer Fire Department was the original name of the group, but as time went by other divisions and programs sprung up, and had to be named.
