Well, if you skipped a book then it figures that you'd have some gaps in your knowledge. I think it'd be a good idea if you tried to find whichever book it is you haven't read and made sure you understood it - and if you haven't read the Unauthorized Autobiography or the notes from the Rare Edition of The Bad Beginning (which, helpfully, are avaiable in Dastardly Documents here), you should try and find those too.

I don't think Jerome and Justice Strauss account for all the Js's either. I think Olaf was the JS who sent invitations to all the bad people (sir, Nero, bass, Remora) but of course there's no way of knowing that. And was he the one who checked in ordering tea with sugar? Was he the one skulking around the basement?

Beats me, but I just found a not-very-old J.S. thread which we should probably be using instead. Frernests and J.S.Or somebody could start a new thread just for J.S. I've thought of some new ideas, but there are holes.

I think that person meant "volunteer", as that meaning's been just about entirely confirmed(although, as people have mentioned before, it's not the only acceptable one).

Well Isadora shouted it from the sshamh and they found it in the Quagmire notebooks in thh. They also found a scrape that said fire so those two are pretty much solid. It also says volunteer on the snicket family tree in LSUA.

Was he the one skulking around the basement? I don't think Olaf would impersonate. Remember that in TVV, he murdered Jacques Snicket, who the villagers mistook as Omar or Olaf. Then Olaf framed the Baudelaires for killing "Omar." Olaf can say he is Count Olaf to the populace "not Count Omar, who is dead…" to anyone who had the misfortune of asking.

He could impersonate, JS isn't Jacques Snicket everyone knew he was dead by that time. And VFD observers wouldn't get names wrong like the punctilio. But then they might've just said it was Count Olaf instead of going along with the impersonation. Perhaps he was disguised until he showed up in chapter 8 I believe it was.

I agree with Jacques. The punctilio aren't the only source of knowledge of count olaf, and more than just a couple of people know who he is.

Quite right, he seems to be VFD's big bad wolf, and even Mr. Poe knows who he is.
