she also said kitchen in french once. she only said halfof the word but that what it means. What was the word for kitchen and when did she use it? Maybe Sunny picked up various foreign words from listening to her elders read to her. And admittedly, I don't blame her for her occasional rudeness--she's having a tough childhood. |

I think it's Japanese for 'my mother' or just 'mother'. Japanese have a way of saying names like 'Alfred-san' or 'Midori-san' and all sorts. I hope I'm right.  |

Maybe, maybe not. I'm not sure. She can also speak Arabic, I just realized. In GG, Klaus says "Hello!", Violet says "Hello!", and Sunny says "Shalom!"

I also remember Sunny saying 'Mamasan'. I think it's Japanese for 'my mother' or just 'mother'. Japanese have a way of saying names like 'Alfred-san' or 'Midori-san' and all sorts. I hope I'm right. "San" is an honorific title attached to some Japanese names. Which book is "Mamasan" from? I don't think I remember Sunny using that word. Also, Shalom is Hebrew, I think. |

I tried to look Mamasan up in any of the "Sunny-speak" dictionaries I know are on the web somewhere to see if I could find where it was from and what it meant, but I failed. I don't think I remember it being used, either. Shalom is indeed Hebrew; it means "peace" and is used as a greeting of hello and goodbye - the longer form is "Shalom Aleichem" which means "peace be on to you." Or at least this is what Google tells me. I wrote a thing about Sunny's speech in one of my various notebooks. Let me see if I can find it. Ah. From my notes on tBB: page 12 - "and even Sunny, who of course was too young to really understand what was going on[...]" Is she? She's just a baby at this point, of course. One often forgets that a bit. But it's true...but it's also strange, like in The Dismal Dinner, she sees Count Olaf at the window and shrieks (in the midst of her supposedly-teething related sobs) "Funcoot!" But later, here in tBB, she doesn't know him, of course (Mr. Snicket comments on the process of teething "it is often difficult to remember what all the fuss was about."). And did she shriek "Funcoot!" knowingly? Connecting the face with Al Funcoot, Count Olaf's playwright pseudonym? Would she know of this pseudonym? Are Sunny's utterances and the hints and cleverness therein really hers, products of her own mind, or merely Daniel Handler being cunning? Perhaps I must remember that she isn't just advanced for her age, she is also very small for it. Uh...the point being, how smart is Sunny, really? IS she too young to understand what's going on? How much does Sunny actually know and remember? If she knew the meaning of "Funcoot," I once again despair at the heap of things the Baudelaires know but don't think to bring up for the sake of the poor confused people reading the tale of their lives. |

I think that a lot of what Sunny says is simply an in-joke, although I agree that the Baudelaire orphans know way more than they're letting on.

Babaganoush is Arabic though, right? It's this paste sort of thing made out of eggplant, and Sunny uses it to mean eggplant...quite clever. I wish I was multilingual like that... Busheney is my favorite as well, although I also like "Ackroyd" which means "Roger," which shows that Sunny is familiar with the works of Agatha Christie. Edit: sunny said "cuisi" which is like"kitch" for kitchen. I think it's more like, cuisi, short for cuisine. But you could be right... |

Thats a funny coincidence. She also seems to be very smart- In TSS she says "Bicuspid?" which is said to mean "Should I drag my teeth against the ice, too?" but what some may not know is a bicuspid is a tooth... seems like lemony didn't feel like making a separate language for sunny so he just incorporated a bunch of different ones... even if it means making a "young girl" swear in French...
