Does that thing curl? Cos that shell looks rather solid. I believe that Gregor Anwhistle created the ? beast to kill enemy submarines, but when AA burnt down, or possibly when Gregor was kidnapped (or perhaps both happened at the same time) the creature got free and now preys on all things. My reason for this is: It cannot be good, as it chases the Queequeg, and it cannot really be bad, cos it chases Olaf. So it either has to be a creature without a mind, or perhaps a third party that isn't good and that isn't Olaf's ally (So M and N are out). Perhaps the FFP where trying to rob them?

The nautilus is a fascinating idea, but with that stiff shell it wouldn't be able to curve and coil. Also, there's some doubt that genetic engineering technology exists in Snicket's world. However, we could combine that theory with the serpent one and say that it's a giant bio-engineered serpent. This is how I think the Question Mark, if it's a submarine, looked through the window of the Queequeg; it has lights/windows on its head. Alternatively, it could be bioluminescent like a deep-sea fish. (TGG doesn't mention it having lights, I just imagined it that way)

That is an impressive picture, Antenora. It cannot be good, as it chases the Queequeg, and it cannot really be bad, cos it chases Olaf. So it either has to be a creature without a mind, or perhaps a third party that isn't good and that isn't Olaf's ally (So M and N are out). Perhaps the FFP where trying to rob them? I have never really judged M. and N., or anyone similar to them, as being true allies of Olaf. In fact, I don't think that any of the fire-starters are allies. They're individual practioners, although they may group together in slightly bigger groups (Esmé and Olaf are a pair, as are M. and N.), and any bigger alliances are simply out of convenience, or if there's something in it for them. Dr. Orwell worked with Olaf because she wanted money (they even disagreed about how much they would each get). M. and N. are working with Olaf because they a) hate volunteers and b) want to destroy all evidence of their wrongdoing. If the Hotel is destroyed, along with all the volunteers and all the evidence, then it's every villain for him/herself. If the question mark was a submarine manned by fire-starters, and they had no interest in Olaf's plots, they certainly wouldn't want him or anyone else lurking in their territory.

Antenora, great picture. FFWF, I disagree. I believ M and N are his allies, and they woulnd't chase him. But you already know my opinions. So here is my drawing of the creature, the worst of the lot. I am a writer, not a drawer, but I did my best. I had some trouble involving an eraser, so I had to doctor the teeth a bit. THE ULTIMATE ? BEAST: tinypic.com/1pb385

Thanks for the compliments on my picture. PJ, your question beast looks a bit like a lamprey, or possibly a leech. I don't remember for sure--was the creature described as looking like a giant version of a Lachrymose Leech? Somehow I remember that description coming up.

As i've said, I am a bad artist, and I just imagine it to be a sea serpent like the one in the map. My art is kinda ... bad anyways. But it COULD be a huge leech..... Handler would do that, have a normal leech, then grow it to gargantuan size using some kindo of bioengineering process in AA. Interesting....

Since it seems we have exhausted the topic of the sea monster on the map, what about the volcano?
TWW, pg 126: "I have seen many amazing things in my long and troubled life history. I have seen a series of corridors built entirely out of human skulls. I have seen a volcano erupt and send a wall of lava crawling toward a small village."
Could there be a village near Daedalus Dock which was threatened by a volcano? Is that island a cannibal island which makes corridors of human skulls?
Are there any other mentions of volcanos by Lemony? Someone said he mentioned a volcano as a hiding place, but I haven't found the reference.

I don't know, but re-reading THH I've noticed a map of Lake Lachrymose in a picture, and it shows me that I need to redo that part of my own map slightly.

I believe that was me in the Things Asoue Characters would never say thread: Lemony:I am currently hiding from my enemies in an active volcano. My face is on fire. Ouch. Also, the warning sign made of dead monkeys made me think of volcanoes and tropics....

It could maybe be a lacrymose leech that swam too far from Lake Lacrymose. I recall somewhere in TRR on the discription of Lousy Lane that noted that the horseradish factory dumped chemicals into the Grim River. Maybe, because eventually all of the rivers lead out to the sea, the chemicals made the leech get bigger? On a different note, perhaps the IDV is a seasnake and it got out (remember, in TSS one of the villains said that a trained reptile escaped) and THAT is what is roaming the sea.....

I don't really remeber that, but it sounds like a very good explaination. Maybe more will be detailed about it in B13 or TBL. I hope so, as it could make for an exciting storyline.

Maybe the Hotel Denouement and (SPOILER) "Olaf-Land" should be put on the map, too, now that The End is out.
