Are Olaf and the Baudelaires actually related? If they are, shouldn't the Violet and Olaf marriage be wrong? It said in TBB that Olaf is a 4th cousin 3 times removed/3rd cousin 4 times removed.
What do you think?

Well, now here is the question on my mind:
What the heck does "3 times/4 times removed" mean???

I doubt it that Olaf is related to the Baud's in any shape or form. Proof of this is not being invited to Bauderlire dinner's (but the schism could explain that). I think Olaf managed to somehow get his name into the family tree by getting Esme to get family papers and stick himself in the tree. Then, the real cousin three times removed was killed off...

Despite other reasons, it was legal for Olaf to marry Violet, despite it being gross. I mean, they are related, but very distantly. My sister is marrying her 2nd cousin and my dad and mom are second cousins too. It's perfectly legal.

Marrying your cousin is not illegal.
My great grandmother's sister married her first cousin. Yeah, freaky, but it's the truth.
And I believe Olaf and the kids are related. They could just have a large family and so they never knew him. I myself have a large family and don't know half of my relatives.

Great. When I'm 50, I can marry my cousin. Just great. At least that's the law....

I live in Ontario, Canada. I'm guessing it's legal for sencond cousins to marry then.
I have a big family too. But most of them are scattered in Ontario and some parts of Canada.

well.. what is it in Mexico? I thought the four times removed thing was pretty much standard around the world.. I mean your grandchildren will always be the third cousin of your cousin. OK, now I know how it is. I'll explain it similar as swans did. My mom's cousin is my second-uncle, his son/daughter, will be my second-cousins, and his grandchildren will be my second-nephew/niece. Well, my third-cousin is the son/daughter of my mom's second-cousin. Do you understand this?
