Just a thread to discuss why you think the Carnival freaks joined Olaf! Personally, I think they're not all bad but they were brainwashed into joining him.

Hm, I'm sure we had a thread on this before, but I can't immediately see anything.
Most people hate the freaks - which is kinda reasonable, I guess, since none of them really had any problems. However, they honestly believed they were freakish, so they were rather brainwashed, and when Olaf started burning down Caligari Carnival, they didn't really have anywhere else to go other than with him. (And I know they intended to anyway, but when it came down to it, none of them got the chance to murder Olivia - the bald-headed man ended up doing that, and lost his own life in the process.)

I don't hate the freaks. They were obviously brainwashed. I can't imagine why an ambidextrous person and a contortionist would hate themselves so much, especially since I thought you had to get training to learn how to be a contortionist in the first place.

They're just weak people, I think, made weak by inaccurate self-perception more than anything. I can't force myself to like them, but I can understand them and sympathize to an extent. They're not bad people, simply defeated people, whom life has caused much agony. And they're really very intriguing characters.

I think the Freaks joined Olaf because they thought he would, essentially, take care of them. It's like people being friends with the bully so they don't get picked on themselves.
I like the way Handler satirized the Freaks.

I agree, Snicket Fires. In addition, having such a low self-image, they wouldn't see themselves as capable of being anything but Freaks, and their carnival was gone. On the other hand, they could have left with the visitors from town and the other carnival workers who were "running for their lives" (P. 165 TCC).

That's because people who are deformed freaks are that way because they're evil[/u]. [/sarcasm]

Love that comparison. I pretty much think that they are weak, but they weren't really brainwashed. I think they thought joining Olaf was the best option, against getting eaten, staying at the carnival or anything else they could see happening to them. I find the freaks fairly pathetic (I find the Quagmire's pathetic, so chances are that's just me), but I think I can see the reasoning behind their decision.

I agree with the point that they were weak. I don't like them for betraying the Baudelaires, though.

Loathe the freaks. Kevin I hate the most of all asoue characters, ever. If I met him, I'd punch him in his ambidextrous face. Twice.
Yeah, they're basically the most ignorant and stupid and infuriating bunch in all of asoue. They are everything that I stand against.

I might be stealing this from somewhere, but if I ever met Kevin I'd grab both his arms and make him punch himself, while I shout 'Stop hitting yourself with your equally strong arms!'

Are you an Arrested Development fan too manbehindthehedges?
Also I think the carnival people joined the troupe because it was better than making no money, while being humilated every day and having no future to look forward to beyond being lion food.
It's almost like a metaphor for why people join the army or gangs or why they become criminals.

I guess they must have been brainwashed. Maybe just persuaded because they wanted a life, as we find out they never had much of one.
