Hmm, there's a gigantic party with alcohol and sex, and...um, some sex, yes. And lots of alcohol and drugs. Oh, and, a molestation, is what you'd call that, I guess. So, yes. I don't think it's any less "dirty" than Adverbs, although it is considerably less so than Watch Your Mouth as far as I remember (although, let's face it, most things are.)
Although someone who has read both in close succession and/or recently should comment, because it's been a while for me.

Adverbs is bad, man. I was totally shocked when i read it. And I thought it was about a gay man that falls in love with his cab driver then falls in love with a girl that works with him. I was totally confused with it.
umm...i think ill see if my other library has The Basic 8 though.

The Basic Eight has sex in it but, as Shruti said, it's far less graphic than Watch Your Mouth. There's also some pretty gruesome descriptions of violence. I love the book, though. Excellent sense of humour.

Honestly, though, I didn't think there was anything "shocking" or "dirty" about Adverbs...so if you thought it was bad, you'll probably think TB8 is bad too.
Edit: Also, fordxprefect, ISN'T it? I was so excited when I discovered it. There is a John Edward hair salon within walking distance from me. I am so going there next time I need a haircut, provided they don't cost $400.

Ohh, okay. I think I first read TB8 when I was fifteen. If you're easily squeamish or just sort of unsettled by drugs/sex/alcohol/violence, I'd hold off a year or two. I mean, after all, these books are aimed at adults - and there's no point in reading them if you won't derive enjoyment from them, anyway. But I mean ultimately it's your call. Sorry if I haven't helped much...

The Basic Eight is a wonderful novel with an amazing sense of humor. Anyone who has been to high school can relate. As for questionable material...Like Shruti said, some sex stuff. I don't consider the absinthe sequence questionable because it was funny. ('i'm a moose!') As for the violence, I found the most gruesome part of the book came when Flan explains why she hasn't eaten hamburger in some time.

Actually, it's Watch Your Mouth that is to do with incest. And a famous monster of Jewish legend.
