I know this book draws its inspiration from ASOUE, even though it's not part of the series. I'm just wondering if the story sounds like it could occur in the ASOUE Universe, though. I immediately think of Lousy Lane from The Reptile Room.

You can find some information about Horseradish here. It's actually a collection of quotes from, and inspired by, the Series rather than a story in its own right.

Possibly quagmire44 was referring to the story in the introduction. Unlike Snicket's festive tales, which feature rather too many sentient objects to really co-exist with aSoUE, I don't see a problem with the Horseradish introduction taking place in the aSoUE setting. Just so long as we're not going to cook up absurd theories about the teacher being an undercover volunteer and the wide man being Daniel Handler or things like that. Snicket describes it as "an old story," which makes it unclear whether it is itself a fictional legend within the aSoUE setting.
