"That's fine with us," Klaus replied, smiling. "I'll pay."

“I’ve got a bus pass,” Esmé explained, “so there’s no need to pay for me. Thank you, though.”
As promised, Isadora paid the bill, and afterward the three friends exited the restaurant.
“The bus station isn’t far from here,” Esmé told Klaus and Isadora as they headed down the sidewalk. “Only about three blocks away.”

"Sounds cool!" gushed Isadora, as she and Klaus ran after Esme.
"Right," agreed Klaus, nodding. He began to wonder what the Esme he knew was like, when she was younger. From what he heard, both Esme Squalor and Carmelita Spats had redeemed themselves. Still, he could remember how badly Esme had treated them. Klaus then realized that their new friend was not the same person as the Esme they knew.

Esmé doubted that Beatrice would mind there being two other people joining them. Lemony was going to be a guest as well, and Esmé was confident that both he and Beatrice would get along with Klaus and Isadora. The group soon arrived at the bus station, and climbed aboard the bus that would drop them off at the stop near the Taylors’ mansion. “Beatrice has been very lonely lately,” Esmé said as she and her two friends slid into a seat together. “She always enjoys meeting new people, so she’ll happy that I’ve brought you two along.” [O.K., I’m off to get ready for bed now. Tomorrow we can probably introduce Beatrice and Lemony, and maybe even do some more with the Quagmires, Violet, Jennifer, Monty and Jerome. ]

"I'm looking forward to meeting her," Klaus replied, eagerly.
"She sounds like a nice girl," agreed Isadora.
OOC: That sounds great with me.

[O.K., cool! ] The bus eventually let the passengers off in front of a park bench. Once Esmé, Klaus and Isadora had piled off, Esmé explained to her friends where they would be going next. “The Taylors live just up the road,” she said. “It isn’t a very long walk— only about fifteen minutes. Let’s go.” The group started up the road, and eventually the crown of the Taylors’ enormous mansion came into view. Unable to contain her excitement, Esmé skipped ahead of her two friends, her stiletto heels clicking against the concrete.

"That is a beautiful mansion!" breathed Klaus, stunned.
"You can say that again," agreed Isadora, excitedly.
OOC: That's not the same mansion that the Baudelaire children grew up in, is it?

“It is, isn’t it?” Esmé agreed, as the group halted before the two front gates. “Just wait until you see the inside!” Leaning forward, she pressed the button on the intercom and spoke clearly into it. “Hello,” she said. “This is Esmé Salinger. I’m here to see Beatrice.” A moment later the front gates opened, and the three children made their way up to the enormous mansion. Extending one long-nailed finger, Esmé pressed the doorbell. They waited approximately one minute before the door opened and the Taylors’ butler, Matthew, appeared. “Good afternoon, Miss Esmé,” he said. “Right this way. Miss Beatrice is expecting you.” [Nope. That one belonged to Bertrand’s parents. ]

"Nice to meet you, sir," Klaus replied, nervously - as he and Isadora followed Esme and Matthew into the house.

Matthew smiled. “And you as well,” he said to Klaus and Isadora.
“Matthew, these are my friends,” Esmé explained. “Klaus Baudelaire and Isadora Quagmire. I hope Beatrice won’t mind that I’ve brought along some extra company.”
“I doubt it. In fact, Miss Beatrice has been quite lonely lately, so I’m sure she’ll appreciate it. She and her fiancé are waiting for you in the parlor.”
“How is she?” Esmé asked, as Matthew led the three children down a long hallway. “It seems it’s been ages since I’ve last seen her.”
“Tired,” Matthew replied. “But I’m sure that once she sees you, then all that will change.”
They soon arrived at the door leading into the parlor, and the children waited while Matthew announced them.
“Miss Beatrice,” he said, “your guest has arrived, and she’s brought two companions with her.”
“Thank you, Matthew,” returned a placid voice from inside the room. “Send them in.”
Matthew nodded to the children, and with a sweep of his hand ushered them into the room.
The children saw Beatrice seated at a grand piano, her hand draped protectively over her pregnant belly. Standing beside her was a young man, whose hands were resting on her shoulders.

"Hello," replied Klaus, nervously. Beatrice did, in fact, look like a younger version of his mother. "How do you do?"
OOC: Would this be a good time to return to the group that consists of Violet, Jennifer, Quigley, Duncan, Monty, and the Jeromes? We were at the Veritable French Diner, which is where the group met my Jerome.

[Sure. I’ll pick up the Veritable French Diner scene in this next post.] “Very well, thank you,” Beatrice said, smiling softly in the direction of Klaus and the two young women. “Beatrice,” Esmé said. “Lemony, I’d like you to meet Klaus Baudelaire and Isadora Quagmire. I ran into them earlier this afternoon downtown.” “It’s a pleasure to meet you both,” Beatrice said. “As I’m sure Esmé has already told you, my name is Beatrice Taylor.” Placing one hand over that of the young man’s resting on her shoulder, she added: “And this is my fiancé, Lemony Snicket.” *** “You wouldn’t happen to have a younger brother named Andrew,” Jerome asked the older Jerome, “would you?”

"Actually, no, I don't," replied the elder Jerome. "I was an only child. My mother, Sylvia Larson, was very loving. Actually, my father - Reginald Squalor - also was. He was quite the pacifist, though - and encouraged me to just go with the flow. Whenever my parents fought, Mom always got her way." "His grandmother, Charlotte White," added Quigley, with a lopsided smile, "was the twin sister of our great-grandmother, Annette White." "Sometimes," purred Violet, as she ran her finger along the dimple in Quigley's left cheek, "it almost seems as if Jerome could be your father." OOC: Psst, did you catch the in-joke?

The younger Jerome did his best to look happy, and smiled around at everyone. But, deep down, he could feel the jealousy gnawing away at his heart.
Not only was this older Jerome better looking than himself, but appeared to have two supportive parents. He probably had a wife and kids, too, or at least a girlfriend. Come to think of it, everyone the younger Jerome knew had somebody special. His self esteem was made all the more delicate by the fact that Andrew seemed to have a new girlfriend every week.
Monty was the first to notice how quiet his friend had gotten in such a short amount of time. “Hey, Jerome,” he said. “Are you O.K.?”
“Fine,” Jerome replied, even as he felt tears threaten the backs of his eyes.
[Yes, I did. ;D I loved the way you pointed out the irony between the two sets of Squalor parents.]

"Are you, uh, feeling okay?" asked the elder Jerome, sympathetically. He could tell that the younger Jerome was hurting. "Did I, uh... Did I say something wrong?"
"You can tell us," prodded Quigley, as he placed his arm around the younger Jerome. "We're your friends."
OOC: Thanks. BTW, was Maxwell abusive towards both Jerome and Cora?
