I wish I could tell you, but I really don't know.

That's fair enough. Sometimes things just rub you the wrong way.

Olaf and Nero is an option but there's no Violet/Isadora? Man, I'm gonna have to rough up some sucker around here. I voted Quiglet though because I'm predictable garbage.

Kit/Olaf really intrigues me (I mean, come on. Olaf hates books and just wordy things in general. He remembered and recited something for Kit. That's something, right?). I wonder why Olaf was a villain in the first place, especially if he appears to be in love with a noble volunteer, who would surely rub off on him in some way?

All I can say by way of explanation is that it was almost certainly a very long time ago.

That whole thing confused me because it makes it seem like Olaf used to be a noble volunteer, but in The Unauthorized Autobiography it made it sound like Olaf was evil and hated. And then, just to confuse further, at Wade Academy in ATWQ there is graffiti in the tower saying "Olaf loves guess who".

It may be that O's breakup with Kit was what led to his becoming a villain.
It's true that in TBL, presumably before that, he is writing obscene anagrams, suggesting he was never a particularly good volunteer; but since he is in school with L and B at this point, which must be after the schism, it would seem he was at least officially on the noble side. As for Wade Academy, he may have been there before he was recruited.

I suspect Olaf was never very good at being a volunteer, but it's hard for a child to be evil and hated. The truth usually lies somewhere between two extremes.

You can kind of feel sorry for Olaf as a child--since I think we can presume he wasn't a good volunteer--with the Snickets and co as associates; they'd all unintentionally outshine him, and that could really be a rude awakening, if we take Hermes idea on Wade Academy (I think that's it, too). The kid goes from a special school for nobles, to secret organization training, and then there's Kit and Beatrice and the rest with all their brains and talent. It's no reason to go putting ink in Lemony's root beer float or any of the far worse things he did/does, but his entire life, including his love life, seems complicated. As for the poll... aaaah, about five of my favorite couples are here and you want me to pick one??? Just ONE??? *rummages for coin to flip*

Mobile posting, site stability and Internet connections can be funny old things, and sometimes double-posts just happen. Let's leave it at that.

As I said at the time, it's possible Ms. Unfortunate had yet to read TSS back in 2012, but perhaps she has had time to do so now. If she hadn't read TSS, she won't have read The End to learn about Beatrice the second ("Beatrice Jr."), either, and the adult Beatrice would indeed make an odd partner for the infant Sunny.

like half of these characters would make "odd" partners for each other, you'd have to be one twisted-ass weirdo to ship some of them.

I like how Teleram is making fun of the op of a 7-year-old thread

i'm only posting here because it popped up in the recently updated threads page and was curious to see why such an old thread was being updated

Given the absurd number of possible pairings in the series, then in functional terms a thread like this might have been better off without a poll, or one with just a few of the most canon ships listed - but perhaps a sprawling and often arbitrary selection is in itself a better reflection of both the books and their fans.
