Okay, we know that the Snickets are none to fond of the food that was served at The Anxious Clown - and Baudelaires didn't seem too fond of it, themselves. However, Arthur Poe liked it - and I'm sure that he's not alone in his opinion.
I was thinking about another major chain, McDonald's. It's one of the most maligned corporations around - but, yet, the place does somehow manage to stay being popular.
Anyway, I was wondering how you think The Anxious Clown would compare to McDonald's. You can also throw in other restaurant chains, such as Burger King.

Wow, this isn't a question I would ever have expected. I suppose that, while The Anxious Clown may be a bit TACky, since the franchise appears to be partly staffed by undercover volunteers it may be that there are outlets that aren't so bad. Unless it's where V.F.D. sends all their worst chefs.

Anxious Clown reminds me a bit of Jack in the Box. Both have a clown theme and both have revolting food.
When I eat fast food, I only have chicken nuggets/strips and fries. I don't eat beef, so I never order burgers. Besides, chicken nuggets/strips and fries are hard to mess up.

I think The Anxious Clown is the worst restaurant ever. I think the reason Arthur Poe likes it is because he's literally oblivious to everything, including how bad the food is.

I avoid eating fast food, specially at McDonalds, though I do indulge in it from time to time, but I never eat burgers, and I choose chicken instead, with fries. I guess the 'Anxious Clown' is a reference to the mascot of McDonalds, Ronald McDonalds. I always thought Ronald was anxious to see people eating their feelings and clogging their arteries with their bad bad food.
Fast food is ok if you don't eat it EVERY goddamn day. If you do, you're in for a rollescoaster of health issues.

I guess here is where I'm coming from. I've known quite a few people who think that the food at McDonald's at disgusting - but, on the flip side, I know plenty of other people who enjoy McDonald's. I myself happen to enjoy the McDonald's food - even though I go for the fish and chicken, rather than the burgers.
I guess the basic question is, is the food they serve at The Anxious Clown so disgusting that even the people who enjoy McDonald's food would be repulsed by it - or is it of a similar "your mileage may vary" standing?

I think it is something most people would feel repulsed by, yet some people still eat there.
For example, the pizza from my old high school cafeteria was disgusting, yet people still ate it.

I think people without much culinary experience would probably find The Anxious Clown satisfying, like McDonald's, but the Baudelaires have gotten used to a different standard with their wealthy upbringing. Cheap fast food doesn't measure up.

They say in TVV that they aren't picky eaters, and their upbringing didn't necessarily include expensive or exquisite food; in fact, they seem to eat fairly normal things, such as toast (the one Violet burned) and pancakes (their parents made afterwards) and salads (several, it seems). After all, Mr. Poe appears to be fairly wealthy, and enjoyed the food.

I guess it comes down to personal taste, after all. I myself enjoy some of McDonalds' foods, not all of it. Maybe Lemony described the Anxious Clown's food as being horrible due to his own personal dislike for their food due to being forced to eat there to get messages from one of the waiters.

The terrible food at the Anxious Clown is also commented on in TUA, both by Jacques and by Captain S. It seems to be a widely shared opinion. I agree with freebird that Mr Poe's liking it is a sign of his general inattentiveness.

The goal of The Anxious Clown isn't to make good food, it's to send messages to other volunteers. It's the kitsch restauraunt that everyone visits at least once, but the returning customers would be a. volunteers or b. people with horrible taste. It needs to be as unattractive as possible to work. McDonalds, on the other hand puts effort into advertising and has returning customers (whether you like it or not, you've eaten there more than once). So The Anxious Clown probably has worse quality food than McDonalds will ever have because a wide range audience would not be beneficial.

That's a great analysis of the Anxious Clown, ollkorrect; the idea that the restaurant is deliberately playing up to the tacky stereotype to deceive the casual customer really sheds a new light on the chain.

I think it's meant to be a little obscure. Anyway, it's not as though it's the craziest name Snicket's come up with.
