In another news, the french translation of WWBU is set to be published on August 23rd. It translates as " Inventory after break-up."  ...Well that was fast. It hasn't even been published in the UK yet, or am I mistaken ? Hope they got someone actually competent to do the translation this time. |

It's being published in the U.K. in August as well, which is an interesting coincidence - or not a coincidence? Neat that the book cover is completely different while still being in the spirit of the original. |

That is an interesting cover, particularly the burnt out match. I haven't read WWB because it isn't yet out in Britain, so I don't know if the match has any significance in the story, but it makes for a nice ASoUE reference too.

I like that cover better than the original, actually. I like the composition, it's more appropriate for the synopsis, and I agree that the match is a nice ASOUE reference.

"Inventory" is an interesting way to put it, given the content of the story, but I don't think it's inappropriate.
(The matches, by the way, are in fact part of the story.)

Has it really been two years? Long time to write a picture book, but of course Handler had other projects, and illustrations take time. I do recognize Klassen's style, and I think it's a good match for Snicket. Meanwhile, I can only imagine the satire involved in "conquer his fear"; I'd be surprised if the poor boy makes it out of the story alive.

According to WHSmith it's release date is tomorrow, but I suspect it's inaccurate due to the fact that Waterstones already have it in stock. I'm going out to buy my copy tomorrow.

I'm sorry, I'm not quite familiar with all the abbreviations, could someone please tell me what does "WWBU" stand for ? I don't know if I'll buy it, if I do, the translation better be good, but I think Daniel Handler is better in English ... His style translates best in its original language !

You're right that Handler's humour probably doesn't translate very well; it doesn't rely on wordplay exactly (although it seems there's maybe a lot more of that in All The Wrong Questions), but there's a great deal of importance given to English initials and what words can mean. |
