Hm. Well I guess that would sure be a reason to buy the short lived edition. Assuming it is real.
Perhaps Little Brown and Harper Collins made a deal, having both been publishers of Handler, and since this promotes both of them.

It's definitely real. The question is, why only Canada? They've been known to release information sooner than other Snicket countries ... and this would give the short-lived edition a reason to exist. I agree with Bryan; the situation promotes both HC and LB.

Of course. I'd forgotten the two branches are part of the same company, which explains why Egmont and Little Brown aren't hosting a similar competition.

Here is the back cover of the TBB SLE. It's pretty stylish for what it is!

Nice that they acknowledge the original while at the same time replacing it. The "From the desk of Lemony Snicket" header is also familiar.

The header is from the Unauthorized Autobiography.

That's a really neat reference to make. They didn't have to include that header, but they did, and it shows that they really thought about it.

I think it also makes an appearance in TBL, with "From the desk of" scratched out? If not, it's still a nice addition not only because it shows genuine consideration but also because it explains why a letter is covering another letter in context with the book.

I think it's "the desk of" that is scratched out, so that it merely reads "From Lemony Snicket.". I think that was in the U.A. as well, though.
Edit: Although incidentally, like a couple of other reprints of the books, I find that the quality of the chapter images has taken a sharp decrease, as if they had to copy them from the pages of previous editions and had lost the original artwork.

I would get this book, since it's so cheap and also since it would be nice to have the thing about it being short lived, though I have quite a few copies of TBB, three I think.
Edit: Four with The Rare Edition.

Go for it, Cybermystery. I got this and it took me up to eight different copies. If it just had a sticker on the front, that would be one thing, but the back cover seals the deal, for the rather exclusive conditions of deal-sealing under which collectors operate.

Was there anything necessarily different inside?

Aside from, as I mentioned, lower-quality pictures - not a thing that I could see.
