It's illustrated on graph paper, anyway, which might be significant in other respects than the obvious. But I just checked, and sea horses have no teeth - a miniature sea serpent, perhaps?
Edit: Interesting, too, it should be released February 28th of all dates.

Also, I could have sworn there was some mention of a seahorse statue in asoue, but maybe I'm just thinking of the frog lamp or something. Could it be the leech paperweight from TBL? ...Yes, it is so easy to confuse a seahorse statue, frog lamp, and leech paperweight. The graph paper suggests to me that it's been drawn by young Lemony, perhaps in class - assuming that that detail's relevant. As to the date, I shouldn't be surprised if this particular piece of art is a private celebration of Mr. Handler's birthday for those who know about it.

Generally a URL like that is just something randomly generated by whatever website you upload to, but it is feasible that someone may have manually changed it afterwards, since the entire phrase "a gem heist" is fairly conspicuous. Sapphires are gems...

Seahorses are mentioned in ASOUE, though, I think in TE, where it is pointed out that male seahorses give birth - and a little later we are told 'When you emerged from your mother's womb, or, if you are a seahorse, your father's yolk-sac...'.
I very much like the idea that this has to do with the figurine plotline, though I'm not too hopeful.

Yes, me too. Who do you think drew this? EDIT: Perhaps DH himself?

I like the Sapphire idea that crono288 brought up. Perhaps someone is trying to steal the Quagmire family sapphires.

For me, I think the design is too consistent with the brief glimpse of the statue we can see on the placeholder cover (top-right corner), but you're right that it could be a demonstrative sketch of his. There used to be an old document floating around with some pictures of the Baudelaires on it apparently drawn by Handler, so he can draw (and I sort of suspect the scribbly V.F.D. insignia in the U.A.'s introduction is by him, too). But in all likelihood Seth drew it.

Bear in mind however, Crickets cannot mimic human speech, yet they do in ASoUE. If it is indeed a seahorse or sea serpent or any kind of sea animal, perhaps it is something to do with the great unknown? Or maybe a young artists depiction. Background colour= green= unofficial colour of VFD. So do I, but if it is, it's odd it's referred to as a "statue."
Why, it happened to me only the other day. Perhaps, instead of focusing on the image, we should look at the subject line:"Why would anyone want to steal this statue?"

Perhaps, instead of focusing on the image, we should look at the subject line:"Why would anyone want to steal this statue?" Well, clearly the statue is in the novel, since it's on the cover art and this teaser has been sent to us. That would suggest that a major or at least a notable part of the novel's plot involves the theft or attempted theft of this statue. And I think the figurine example, and indeed most examples from ASoUE, suggest to us that the statue has a hidden compartment which contains - treasure? Important evidence placed somewhere which would be both hard to detect and retrieve? Both in the same item? That seems fairly likely. Of course, we should also be a little cautious - I don't think many of you were around for The Nameless Novel, a long promotion for TPP, but that did a lot of work to mislead us about what would be important in the novel and what wasn't. So do bear in mind the possibility that this black seahorse is a red herring.

No, I wasn't, but I have had a look at the document in Dastardly Documents. How long did the daily promotion go on for? We don't really know if this'll be a regular thing, I really hope it is. Everyday seems like too much, so maybe every week?

Regarding the link mentioned earlier in this thread, I think I may have found something rather interesting other than the Gem Heist. As we will all remember at the end of The Bad Beginning Or Orphans, The Reptile Room Or Murder, and The Wide Window Or Disappearance there is a small code just before the extra material, if you look in the link you will see this ox3nlo2WLM which looks very similar to the codes in the three books I mentioned. Of course it may not be anything but then again it might be something.

Perhaps the newsletter server LSATWQ's using to send out the mail can shed some light on that. It looks as though, and this is using haphazard logic, that based on the pricing options we might expect an e-mail once a month. Bear in mind however, Crickets cannot mimic human speech, yet they do in ASoUE. Fair point. A sea horse/leech hybrid would make an interesting story line, anyway. I don't know how much faith we can put into the URL, but the code in the paperbacks don't seem to match with the ox3n... posted? A hidden document in the statue was my first instinct.

Perhaps it's filled with gems, a Maltese [Seahorse/Leech/ ]. Wild speculation, huzzah!

The seahorse/serpent/leech/creature forms a rough S shape. To me, this S shape in a white circle against a green field is reminiscent of Lucky Smells Lumbermill, minus the L, of course. The S "symbol" could represent several entities - the Snickets? The sugar bowl? The aforementioned Lucky Smells?
Thoughts!
