Page 19- ‘For the first time in a long while, Violet felt as if her life… might turn out well after all”- But the fire only occurred less than a week ago. Either Snicket is getting ahead of himself, or the time spent at Mr Poe’s house seemed like aeons. Page 23- “To the bowl of apple cores which sat on a small wooden table”- Probably a coincidence, but I can’t help thinking that maybe these are connected to the Horseradish hybrids from The End. I think I feel a fanfic coming on… Chapter 3 Page 24- “And their parents, smelling smoke, and run downstairs to see what the matter was.” Of course, as members of VFD, they would be very careful around fire. Page 51- Wondering which hand Violet should use to serve the food- another reference to the fact that Violet is right-handed. It’s nice to pick these up.

is everyone here clear on how the "quote" coding works? If this experiment works OK then I am clear on how to quote...is this what you meant? tell me if it seems wrong! We've only managed two chapters today due to an extended library trip on monday and lots of things have already been covered, I see, so I won't post ALL our notes, however... - The first chapter is such a beautiful introduction to the children and I instantly fell in love with them all over again. It is the way that Handler values the gifts of each individual child, not just Violet, Klaus and Sunny, but the other characters we meet along the way, a splendid message to kids that be you a biter, an inventor, a researcher, a mycologist, a cartographer, a poet.(..a fire starter...?....) there is a place of value for you in the world. - About the smell of some dreadful flower at the Poes' house, I hadn't before made the connection to the Royal Gardens and instead thought it was a reference to a poem by Edgar Allan Poe in which he smells flowers after the death of his beloved so thankyou for putting me straight on that! - True to the peppering of all the books with literary allusions, Mr.Poe (his name already an obvious link with the gothic genre) has two sons, Edgar and Albert. I didn't pick up on this until much later in the series but I assume this is a reference to the poet Edgar Albert Guest and we meet them in chapter two. - My children noticed that Olaf has a stuffed lion's head on his wall in chapter two... could this be one of the Volunteer Feline Detectives they wondered? Will post our notes on tomorrow's read asap. Happy re-reading, MamaLu x

Notes on Chapters Three and Four: Sunny bites Justice Strauss's hand to say that she likes her. This makes the last thing Sunny does to her in TPP even worse.
These beginning chapters started out like the typical orphans-in-distress stories with the well mannered children refusing to publically show any unsatisfaction and go out of their way to make their terrible relative happy. I wonder how long until- ...And Violet's already wishing she could poison him. Granted, we're far from the stage where they'd honestly think of doing it, though.
As a kid, I don't think I ever realized how creepy the one line the bald man says to Violet is. So there are two lusting after her?

Probably a coincidence, but I can’t help thinking that maybe these are connected to the Horseradish hybrids from The End. - As cool as that would be, I don’t think it could work if Olaf knew about there being horse apples (as I like to call them) surely he would not have released the mycelium My children noticed that Olaf has a stuffed lion's head on his wall in chapter two... could this be one of the Volunteer Feline Detectives they wondered? - Ha, ha! There will eb more on this on Sunday, but please let me direct you to this asoue.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=documents&action=display&thread=25174Take a look at the first note on part 2, page 23 --Chapter Five-- Klaus considers living on the streets, and although it sounds silly, it is weird that the never considered running from their respective homes and/or count olaf in future books. The chopped wood - yet again I will talk bout this later Ah, The Fountain of Victorious Finance. How innocent you seem! Yet again, I will have more on this later! I Love the ending for this chapter, because it reminds me of moments of great stress in my life, where ive stormed of to my room, picked up a book and - read! --Chapter Six-- Mr Poe telling olaf is just what happens in a child’s book. it’s the sort of mean twist that only an adult could accidentally achiever. Standoffish - or, as the film said, pure evil. Al Funcoot is, of course, and anagram of Count Olaf. Justice Strauss is here showing how much of a hindrance she is, rather than a help. Surely she must be a bit concerned over the whole wedding thing\?

- About the smell of some dreadful flower at the Poes' house, I hadn't before made the connection to the Royal Gardens and instead thought it was a reference to a poem by Edgar Allan Poe in which he smells flowers after the death of his beloved so thankyou for putting me straight on that! Handler probably hadn't thought up all that Royal Gardens business when he first wrote TBB, so what he intended at the time of writing very probably was the Poe allusion you detect. Well done; I didn't know about that.

-- Chapter Seven-- These next two chapters are short, so not many notes. Sunny eating dirt seems very un-sunny like, and more baby like Fernald is uncharacteristically sinister in this chapter. --Chapter Eight-- Klaus reading late into the night is something im sure each of us have done more than once in our lives. And so we have Klaus’ first main reading - a law book. Klaus slow realisation on Sunny remains sinister to this day. --Chapter Nine-- The logs are still there… Olaf constantly refers to the children having low intelligence throughout the series, but he still thinks they’re clever enough to work out his plan, so he bit sunny in a bird cage and angels her out of a tower? This seems convenient. --Chapter Ten-- And now we have violets first invention, a grappling hook, and one of the most realistic ones, although I think it would probably tear when she tried to climb up the side of the tower. We also have the first incident of violet recalling her promise to her parents Plus, the first look at snicket cowardice, when he says he would have given up. I think try and keep a count of these! I’m not going to talk about the implausibility of the hook handed man hooking the grappling hook.

A busy couple of days for people, perhaps? Give them time, and if they don't have anything to say about these chapters, pursue the sequel yourself, I would advise.

Apologies for not contributing so far, Misterm. I have Monday and Tuesday off school (and am ill, so I'm unlikely to be leaving the house) so I'm hoping to post some notes and read the others, too.

Yes, I've been busier this week than I anticipated, but I would like to comment on a few points raised here, even if I can't supply notes this week myself.

Oh, well I was just kinda forgetting about it, but I'll flick through now, and post my notes
Hokai Chapter 1- -I can't help but think that the building in the opening picture seems to be the Cathedral of TAV. Also, what is the dalmatiany thingy on the back of the truck? I always thought that they meant shopping trolley, but now I see they meant tram. -He had not read all of the books. This figures he would not have found any VFD chapter, like the Fungal Ditches one in Mushroom Minutiae -It seems as if Poe is coming from somewhere very far away "Sunny had been saying Gack for quite some time" -Mr Poe is described here as, not only a business associate, but a friend of the Baudelaires, often coming to dinner parties."The children remembered Mr. Poe... was constantly excusing himself from the table to have a fit of coughing in the next room" I imagine that a huge coughing fit would be a good way to mask an important conversation with an unwanted guest in whatever the next room was. -"The fire department arrived of course, but they were too late" it seems as if Poe is talking about VFD here rather than the OFD.
Chapter two -On the picture: it seems as if the smoke is coming from behind the house ruins in this picture. Also, what's with the grates at the front of the house (bottom left and right). Dungeons anyone? -"Mr Poe had taken them to the remains of the Baudelaire Mansion..." Okay, surely something went unharmed. Also, this kinda takes the edge off TEE's end of tunnel scene. -Yes, the ghastly flower does seem suspicious on hindsight. -Presumably the Baudelaires had some other relatives who they knew (eg. Elwyn), because they mention that their parents have never mentioned Olaf to them. -"He is not your closest relative on the family tree" THE UA family tree? I dunno, just an interesting choice of words -The Fickle Fountain "occasionally spat out water". Could this suggest something. Perhaps it was a way to communicate with volunteers? With WCTBATH, it rather seems as if there is more going on with the FF -The pile of dirt seems more likely to have been dumped there in preperation for building something. Also, of course to cover something up. - "An assortment of well groomed plants... in one hand she carried a flowerpot". It rather seems as if JS might have the Poisonous plant. - JS heard about the accident. A) from whom? The Sinister Duo? B) she calls it an accident. Why? -"Help me with my gardening" Seems a bit sus really. -"His face was unshaven" Hmm... sideburns from the front, or beard/moustache? -I reckon the apple cores and lion's head must mean something, if only as a retcon. Maybe the house once contained MM spores?
Okay, I'm done for now I'll finish my notes later =D -
