I know this question has probably been asked quite a few times, but in The Penultimate Peril there is a taxi driver who wants to take the Baudelaires. who is he? what does he want with them? who is the lady in the trunk? My sister thinks he is Lemony Snicket himself, but I'm not sure. help?? thanks!! -Spiffy

This topic is better suited to "The Gloom Looms" or "Cheerless Characters," but I'll answer it here before it's moved. The only thing that's know about the taxi driver is that his description is identical to that of the taxi driver in Chapter One of TWW. However, he is generally considered to be Lemony Snicket, since Lemony Snicket, a few pages later, shows exact knowledge of the contents of that taxi-driver's car. The woman in the boot is sometimes thought to be a mysterious swimming woman from TGG who is also briefly referred to in TPP, and who is probably the one who retrieved the sugar bowl from the pond.

I've moved this to Gloom Looms, Kimber Denouement, as it is better suited for your question.
There is indeed a good deal of evidence to suggest the taxi driver is Lemony. Perhaps the strongest suggestion is his knowledge of the driver's circumstances, habits, and thoughts - a level of knowledge he doesn't quite reach with any characters besides the Baudelaires. On the other hand, I'm not sure we're meant to identify the woman in the trunk, although I recall there was once some speculation that she might be the swimming woman from TGG.

I'd also like to think the driver is Lemony, as it would make sense he is tied in at this point in the story as he researches the orphans lives, and his sister is involved directly. He has always had a heart for the Baudelaires, and it would make sense that he would want them to be among noble volunteers and see the good works and names of their parents.

I too have also speculated that the taxi driver is Lemony himself. Not too sure about the woman in the trunk though. Who exactly IS the swimming woman suppose to be?

You can find a thread on the matter here, but the short answer is "no one in particular." That is, there is speculation she might be R, or Aunt Josephine, or even Mrs. Widdershins, but an explicit answer is never given in the text.

I think it is Lemony Snicket himself as well. The book mentions that an instrument was carefully placed in the backseat. Snicket mentioned in a book earlier in the series that he likes to play a sad tune on his Accordion.

We're talking about the taxi driver in Chapter Ten, although he may also have been driving the taxi pursuing Kit's in Chapter One.

Yes it most likely is Lemony but why and when would Lemony take up smoking? I don't know if Handler smokes in real life

It might well be just for a Veiled Facial Disguise (although the real reason is to be consistent with the TWW taxi driver).
