i think you should be happy when people think you're gay because tbh most heteros are awful So you can just say that like this, but if anyone said it the opposite way everyone would throw virtual salsa at them. i dont even agree with that first comment but like yeah someone saying the opposite would be worse. since the opposite sentiment is still a really popular one and people bash gay people every day, picket their funerals and many are generally ignorant/hateful of the lgbtectect community. sloka's comment is one comment that some people will think is in poor taste but the other one has a world of prejudices and injustices behind it.

I dont agree with / understand that. Both comments are equally prejudiced, no? Or is that what you are saying (your post confuses me sorry).

Both comments (if meant seriously, which this probably wasn't) are equally prejudiced, and both are equally absurd, but one is more likely actually to cause harm (because of what Pandora says - lots of people actually believe it, and do horrible things on the basis of it), and so worse.

^yeah
or also if the first comment is a negative generalization of straight people, it could change if more straight people become understanding/accepting/whatever. whereas it doesnt matter what gay people do really, it's hella hard to combat the second comment (the second comment being a hypothetical bad generalization about gay people). less people are going to care or even realize an issue with the second comment.
but making a bad comment about the norm doesn't usually hurt the norm, if anything it hurts the person making the comment.

Ah, i understand now, not that i agree - i feel both comments could cause harm, regardless of the probability.. don't call anyone awful ;D
(i took the first comment as being serious (i think anka did as well, from what i can tell). Is that correct? )

both a negative statement about straight people and one about gay people could cause harm, but one has the weight of a lot of the world behind it and the other one is the minority.

still, I think we should avoid making negative generalizations, regardless of which is most harmful

this makes me think of white dudes who are offended when their ~freedom of speech~ is taken away because someone makes a comment about their salsaty remarks about women/gays/minorities. like your privilege gives you so many other advantages but you're mad you can't be a jackass while women/gays/minorities have to worry about discrimination, violence and prejudices everyday i'm so sorry for you.

Okay, I just assume people aren't gay if they don't say anything else because I only met a gay person in real life once, so my chances to be right are bigger like this. i think you should be happy when people think you're gay because tbh most heteros are awful So you can just say that like this, but if anyone said it the opposite way everyone would throw virtual salsa at them. oh um well yeah? i mean, that was part tongue in cheek and part not ("some of my best friends are straight!"), but regardless queer people being grumpy about straight people is a thing that happens because straight people and dominant straight culture genuinely are mostly awful about queer things and to queer people, even unintentionally, like by assuming hetero to be the norm and by like erasing/chiding/enacting real violence on deviations from that norm? whereas straight people talking salsa about queer people is because they have institutional power by being the norm and like the entire world backing up their violent/damaging attitudes, like that's the violence the previous thing is acting against ya know?

What about just not calling anyone awful? I feel hurt when people call me awful, no matter if they call the majority of the world awful and I just happen to be one of these people or if they say it's just me who is awful, so I don't do that to anyone.
