Here we can all share our thoughts on S Theodora markson
I wonder what the S could stand for, maybe she was given a rather embarrassing first name, or her first name was the same as someone she didn't get along with, so won't even say that name anymore, will it be revealed by the end of the series what it is?
I think theres a lot about her, and was intended this way, which we can think/speculate on

I agree that there is much about S which invites speculation. Two suggestions that have been made before are particularly interesting.
1. Her first name might be Sunny. (This, of course, implies that she will die.)
2. People have had ideas about who her previous apprentice, who is mentioned several times, might be. There is someone who her manner of speaking sometimes recalls....

I definitely think that the secrecy around her first initial suggests that it's either a joke, something interesting, or both. "Sunny" potentially fulfils the latter, in my opinion; as readers of ASoUE, it suggests several things to us, but I also don't think it's a name that fits Theodora or her disposition very well. I'm in agreement with Hermes on the matter of the previous apprentice.
Oh, one more point to remember about her: According to File Under (specifically, Bad Gang), she has a sister. It's probably not important, but it is a fact about her that might bear speculation for Theodora fans.

Can an initial bribe a person, though? Do you perhaps mean to impress him with a longer and more complicated name?

No, she can tell him "if you do this I'll tell you what the S. stands for".

Yes regardless of whether the S means anything or if she will tell him (if it does) she might get him to do something in the next two books, which he otherwise won't, by saying just that!

The S thing is quite interesting but I am inclined to think it's mostly a joke.

I think that you're probably right. The overall effect across at least half the series has been for it to be a joke, but it would be fitting for that joke to be extended into one big punchline.

I don't think telling what the S stands for would be a substantial incentive for Lemony to do domething he wouldn't otherwise.

I theorize that S would stand for something related to the entire plot of the story, and then when it is revealed to Lemony, he has a major breakthrough. But I'm also open to the fact that it could be a joke because it would be a good comic relief in the quite serious ATWQ series.

I wonder if it could be both?

I wonder if it could be both? If it is both, then I'm really going to look forward to learning what S stands for!

I personally adore S. Theodora Markson; I find her amusing and a little juvenile; but I can't shake the feeling that there is something more to her; something she is hiding, other than her S. initial. I mean, she can't have been taken to join in V.F.D if she didn't demonstrate some skill; unless there is a more nepotistic side to V.F.D and she only got in by association.
She may be 52nd out of 52 but I feel she must have a talent somewhere; besides managing to steal a cup of tea without the drinker knowing.

I'm hoping we might get other displays of talent akin to the theft of the teacup.
