Speaking of the movie; I was going to watch it now before I visited here!
My goodness; 10 years old that is.

It seems to have sunk completely out of the public consciousness, though - a while ago I did a post on Sebald Code, in which I tried to list all the examples, and no one mentioned it. Oh okay, sorry, your post on Sebald must've slipped my attention, otherwise I might've mentioned it. Yeah, promotional material like that, even if (possibly) written by Snicket, is a grey area, that's why I said if you consider something like The Dismal Dinner canon then this should be, too. Just because you don't think it is, Bandit, doesn't make it so. Having said that I see that purists would be right in disregarding it as canon, but I myself like to see it as possible canon as long as it doesn't majorly affect the plot in the novels. To get kind of back on topic, how far does the term "official canon" extend anyway? Would the unreleased illustrations from The Miserable Mill (and any paratextual information therein) be considered canon? Or any new material in the paperback re-releases (somewhat like Snicket's annotations in TBB's special edition)? That's why I think it's better to just make up your own mind as to what is part of that wide-extending ASoUE universe.

Well, without wanting to get into a big debate on the subject, anything written by Snicket is canon, in my mind. Illustrations often deviate from the text and therefore aren't canon - just really nice.

I'm very eager to see the illustrations in this edition and have been having a little think. Brett has said that he might dig them out, although he's not sure where they are and I'm sure it's not his top priority, so this might not happen for a very long time, if at all. As we have the cover of the edition online, I'd guess that the publishers have the internal illustrations too, somewhere. I'd like to try writing to them to ask if they do and if it'd be possible for us to see them. Of course, they probably wouldn't go to the effort of finding/sending them if one fan asks, so it might help if I provide a petition, just to show how many fans actually want to see these special images (should they actually have them). They might not have them, know where they are if they do, or be allowed to share them, but I think it's worth a shot; would people be willing to sign an online petition if I started one?

While I'm sure that the publishers have a high resolution picture of the cover, I don't really think they have the internal illustrations. Nevertheless it doesn't hurt to ask whether they do; I'd be willing to sign the petition. I'm convinced that all other active members here would sign it too.

Thanks! I'll put a petition together. Indeed, it's hard to tell if anything would come from this at all. But even a higher quality cover would be excellent. We'll just have to see

(and it's worth noting that I suspect there may exist unseen illustrations beyond merely TMM) Regarding this, I've just recently looked through The Notorious Notations, and I found that there are at least two or three illustrations found, alas in a small size, inside the circle at the top of certain pages, that are not found anywhere in the original series' illustrations. These include a close up of a crow and a close up of a lion's face (there's also a close up of a snake, maybe Ink, that I don't remember having seen anywhere else).

I think they were quite likely done for TNN, but I suppose it's possible that they were sampled from scrapped illustrations from throughout the series. It's worth noting, incidentally, that even TNN's cover is recycled - it was used for the hard cover beneath the dustjacket of the movie edition omnibus The Ominous Omnibus, and I guess they thought it was too good not to use elsewhere. Much though it gave us the impression when the book was first announced that the text would be "Olaf's story"...

It's been over a year since Brett Helquist posted the unseen Miserable Mill illustrations, but there are a few left to see (including the cover in full quality). He last posted them due to popular demand with the petition, but encouragement has died down and I don't think he'll post any more without further evidence that people are interested. I tweet him with a polite request on occasion, but if anybody else is willing to send a request to @bhelquist (Twitter or Instagram), I think it'd be really useful in convincing him that people would like to see more

Yes, his enthusiasm was never enormously evident. I'll try to back you up, nonetheless.

Thanks a lot We'll only ever see the artwork if we ask for it, so I appreciate the help!

We can use the Facebook fanpage to move people, we have a good level of response there nowadays.
(also hey Liam! It's been a long time since I've seen you around!)

Thanks Zortegus! A Facebook post would certainly be useful! I think it'll take a number of people to persuade him to dig through all his work for those pieces (again) I might try asking on Instagram too after a little while- he's been getting well into that and often posts some marvellous sketches.

Wow, thanks for the head's up on Helquist's instagram - I had no idea he was on there! Some really good behind-the-scenes stuff in there for sure.
