The books have high crossover appeal. They'll likely be going for a family audience.

I think Netflix announced they're starting up in more countries (though I don't know which ones), so that should help people out. One thing I wonder, will Daniel Handler write the scripts? The articles only mention Netfilx is looking for a director (a show-runner would seem more important to me).

Well, Daniel Handler can write scripts, but given that we're looking at a slightly longer-term endeavour I would have thought they might get someone else to adapt, just with him in charge.

Oh my god! I've been away so long I had no idea this was happening! Bizarre actually as back in June I started making notes on how I would write the series as a TV show. This is exciting!!

Daniel Handler will be serving as an executive producer. I should note that when I saw Daniel Handler a couple weeks ago, the host mentioned his involvement in the Netflix series and he went "Well... They ask me things sometimes." When she told him that the Wikipedia page listed him as the executive producer, he said "I have no idea what that means." I'm sure it's no cause for alarm, but I thought it would be helpful to get a little more insight into what degree he's actually participating.

Maybe he's... just being humble? Hmm. It'd be a lot easier to be won over by changes if we believed they had his full confidence, but we'll have to wait and see what we get, won't we. It's easy to be suspicious considering that it was years before he felt comfortable openly criticising the ASoUE movie (though I gather his audio commentary was pretty excoriating).

Something he's been saying recently about the film -- a very tactful choice of words -- is that he's always hesitate to criticize anything that bought him a house, but the commentary he gives on the DVD is hilarious and on-point. He basically blatantly criticizes the film and/or director over a number of things, but one of the parts that I found the best was when he called the filmmakers/Hollywood in general for their sexism (Something to the effect of 'In the books of course it is Violet [who invents the grappling hook and climbs the tower], but I know that Hollywood prefers its leading actresses to do very little.').
In regards to the new series, well, we can only hope he'll be involved more than this latest piece of information seems to indicate. However, even if he isn't, Netflix original series generally seem to be of a very high standard, so hopefully things will be OK ... I really hope he's very much involved, though.

Fortunately, Netflix isn't Hollywood. I don't know if it has its own problems, but I hope it doesn't have to conform so cravenly to the generic filmgoing experience.

And, to be honest, wasn't the ASOUE film, however flawed, better than nothing? Even if it doesn't turn out to be perfect, it's brilliant we'll get something out of this, whether it's a very short season covering the first couple of books or several seasons covering all 13.

I remember being on here, around 3 years ago (and btw, man, time really does fly, huh? It really didn't feel like it'd been that long), and typing out a post in which I'd hoped/foresaw a mini-series being adapted from all the books, and it's finally come true. I actually only just found out about it, and I'm really quite chuffed at the prospect of a Netflix made series. Their work on House of Cards has been phenomenal, I can only expect the absolute best from this.
