I wonder how many episodes there's going to be- if there will be an episode for every book, or two per book or if it will just be completely random. I origionally thought 13 episodes would be cool, but then realized that they would all have to be different lengths.

They've done it before and they have no schedule to cram their shows into, so there's a fair amount of wiggle room. Granted by the end of the series the episodes would have to be almost double in length as the first few.

That's great- I never knew Netflix did that! It would be a cool ending if they split "The End" in two parts to make it more dramatic.

netflix doesn't have willy-nilly episode lengths within individual shows. they do have more options as far as length goes overall though, e.g. their half-hour format shows are legitimately half an hour, instead of 21 minutes like on TV.
i also really doubt this will be planned as one season. there could still be 13 episodes in a season, but there's no way they're going to have the entire adaptation in 13 episodes

Just thinking out loud, but what if there was an episode dedicated to Snicket's flashbacks/Notes to Beatrice? Like, The Unauthorized Autobiography, and the Beatrice Letters?

Actually Arrested Development episodes varied from 28 minutes to 37 minutes. So they can vary in time even in individual shows. How far they'd take that I don't know, but I wouldn't say it's impossible as Netflix isn't really tied to the same rules as the rest of television.

well, i'd constitute willy-nilly as more than that

well, i'd constitute willy-nilly as more than that I wouldn't expect the term willy-nilly to ever apply to anything that's well planned anyways. Realistically a variation of ten to fifteen minutes is about all I'd really expect for an individual season. I think that if they split this up into two seasons the second season could just be longer to accommodate the longer book lengths. It's hard to say how they'll approach this. The first four books I could see fitting into a 60 minute time frame, if not a little less. So one season they could probably get away with a book per episode. They've done longer shows in the past, but this one is more family oriented so it's possible they'd want shorter episodes. Really it's anyone's guess at this point. We still don't know what Netflix is really intending for this show. So it could go many directions.

Ideally these flashback scenes would be intertwined with the main plot throughout the series. Like, we go back and forth in time and see the schism occur parallel to the Baudelaires' adventures.

I agree, but I wouldn't mind if one episode - maybe the penultimate episode of the first series? - consisted entirely of these flashbacks, as a way of stretching a cliffhanger in the main plot while following up on a few plotlines from the flashbacks of previous episodes; maybe connecting the flashbacks to the main plot, so that the viewers could watch the following episode knowing the significance of certain things they wouldn't otherwise have.

Some of both would be cool, which is essentially how the books are written.

thinking about it, one of the things i really liked about the asoue movie was that they inexplicably had different accents in the same area. the Baudelaires were American, Mr. Poe was British, Uncle Monty was Scottish. now that the show seems to have gone the extra mile with racial diversity, i'm hoping everyone will have very different accents. it's a useful element in visualizing the placelessness of the books imo.

Agreed. It would certainly add to the Timeless--or, lack of time period--quality that the books have.

I've mentioned the idea before but I put a few pictures together as a kind-of mood board to explore the idea of Lady Gaga playing Esmé I don't think it'll happen and I don't think everyone would initially agree with the suggestion, but I think it'd be an exciting endeavour: liamfindlay.tumblr.com/post/144320589894/lady-gaga-as-esm%C3%A9-squalor-in-a-series-ofEvery casting decision is awfully intriguing, but I think the choice for Esmé will be something I look forward to most of all! [iftheseriesisn'tdiscontinued] Hi yes I agree holy heck. Other Esmé ideas I've explored: Christine Baranski, Jane Krakowski, Kristen Wiig, Taraji P. Henson, Tyra Banks, Joanna Lumley, and--my forever head canon Esmé--Gwen Stefani.
