Some actors for my dreamed cast: -David Tennant sounds great for Jacques. -If they were younger, Dylan and Cole Sprouse with dyed hair for Quigley and Duncan. I'm sure they'd find a pretty girl that looks like them for Isadora, but welp, they're like 23 now so forget it. -Natalie Dormer for Kit Snicket. -Benedict Cumberbatch for the Denouement triplets. -Daniel Huttlestone with glasses would be a really good Klaus. -Meryl Streep for Aunt Josephine again pretty please. -Lilla Crawford for Carmelita. -If my dreams come true and Burton is the director, Helena Bonham Carter for Beatrice in the flashbacks plz. -Also, start feeding Johnny Depp so he can be Uncle Monty. Edit: OR EVEN BETTER, HELENA BONHAM CARTER FOR ESMÉ SQUALOR. I approve for the Cumberbatch one, but I'm more thinking of Kate Winslet (I was thinking of her role in Divergent) or Tilda Swinton for Kit. But I always imagined that the Denouement triplets looked like Thomas Kretschmann (if he can speak English fluently enough for this that is.)

I also hope the setting is a steampunk present/past kind of atmosphere I feel the same. I thought the steampunk elements of the 2004 film worked very well.

I also hope the setting is a steampunk present/past kind of atmosphere, and that they do a 1 book per season, however im not sure how they would do thisIt would be amazing to have 13 seasons, but I think not even Game of Thrones can get that haha. I hope for at least 4 seasons, but I have the feeling they're going to do just one

Isn't it about time this subforum was renamed 'Adverse Adaptions'?

It might be worth bringing that up as a genuine proposal once the TV series formally moves into production; right now it still doesn't have anything to show for itself.

I think Danny DeVito would do a good job as the director for this.

Because of 'Matilda'? That style does seem like it might suit ASoUE. DeVito hasn't directed anything but a few shorts in a decade though.

Death To Smoochy, which I only just recently saw, has a darkly hilarious directing style that I think shows his talents most and I would love to see it applied to ASOUE. And of course, Matilda shows that he knows how to handle a children's adaptation. This could be, like, his comeback.

Wait, aren't shows supposed to have multiple different directors instead of just one director doing all the episodes? Or did I misread something and they're looking for a director instead of the director?
And by the way, I still stand by what I said earlier about how Sam Raimi would be a good choice for director. I would be pretty cool with Rian Johnson as well.

It may be more normal to have lots of directors, but I'm not sure it's a good idea, especially of it's a series with an arc, rather than just a collection of self-standing episodes. Different directors each doing their own thing can spoil the unity of the work.

That's hardly ever a real problem, even in the most complex TV plots, e.g. Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Game Of Thrones, etc. In fact, I don't know of any shows that have the same director every episode.

The first season of True Detective was directed by a single director: the supremely talented Cary Fukanaga. But I think that was a first for a series; other than that it's usually the director of the show's pilot who sets the tone for the whole series. Examples would be Steven Spielberg for Columbo, or more recently Martin Scorsese for Boardwalk Empire. So it'll be exciting to see who directs the pilot for ASoUE.

i don't think it's the arc which would be affected, it's a matter of asoue having such a distinct kind of narration and style. however, i think one of the movie's many flaws was trying to over embrace the language and aesthetic of the books, without actually managing to capture it at all. a switch of directors may help keep it feeling fresh and genuine.

The movie captured ASOUE's aesthetic very well in my opinion. To be honest, that's really the only thing it had going for it. I felt like the biggest problems were the bad acting and the stupid spyglass explanation thing.
(Which of course won't be a problem with the Netflix series, because we actually know how the story is supposed to end.)

I will hostilely attack the movie for a lot of things, but Meryl Streep was literally flawless. I would watch a ten-part Aunt Josephine miniseries easy.
That being said, I don't agree that it captured the aesthetic well. I feel that it did exaggerate the dark too much, and expand the humour to an unfunny level (which makes sense, as it was a nickelodeon film or whatever disney I don't care). The terrible acting (I'm looking at you Jim Carry sorry), was dumb, and the spyglass stuff, whilst resolving the plot was, I totally agree, the absolute worst.
I'm not getting optimistic about the netflix series quite yet, I'm sure they'll find some way to screw it up (fingers crossed they don't tho). Best bit of the movie was probably the set/ costume design, imo
